The Maestro "Fuzz Tone" Model FZ-1 was the first intentionally designed distortion circuit for commercial applications and released in 1962.
The Rolling Stones first recorded the first version of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction on May 10, 1965 at Chess Studios in Chicago featuring Brian Jones on harmonica and then re-recorded it two days later at RCA Studios in Hollywood with a different beat and Keith using the Gibson Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone.
Keith Richards, on recording "Satisfaction" (1992): "It was the first (fuzztone box) Gibson made. I was screaming for more distortion: This riff's really gotta hang hard and long, and we burnt the amps up and turned the shit up, and it still wasn't right. And then Ian Stewart went around the corner to Wallich's Music City or something [Fife & Nichols] and came around with a distortion box. Try this. It was as off-hand as that. It was just from nowhere. I never got into the thing after that, either. It had a very limited use, but it was just the right time for that song."
