Comet Bennett was discovered on Dec 28 1969 by amateur astronomer John Bennett. Its current designation is C/1969 Y1 while its older style designations are 1969i and 1970 II. It is estimated to have a period of 1700 years and for this approach it turned out to be quite spectacular, having reached a magnitude of about 0. For me March 1970 was quite an exciting month with a total solar eclipse and a bright and easily visible comet.
