Dr Hui,
You're pictures are superb. These are some of the best pictures that I have seen. I do have a couple of questions though. For your macro shots that are really close up, I do not understand how a single 180mm lens is producing those shots. For example, IMG_5540.JPG is an extremely close shot of a dragon fly's head and features what appears to be greater than 1X magnification. I read your post of 19 Oct. 2004 and researched the Tamron 180mm lens. From what I can understand, the lens only provides 1:1 with a focus length of about 18.5". From that, I do not see how it is possible to create such a shot. What's your secret?

Additionally, I am confused as to how your 20D set a shutter speed of 1/1000 in Aperture priority mode. I have a Digital Rebel (used for some of your shots) that has the AP mode. When using AP, the shutter speed is selected by the camera. For taking a shot of a bird and freezing motion, I don't understand how AP mode could be used.

Finally, are you taking pictures in RAW format?

I certainly would love to chat with you about some of the technical aspects of your work. Perhaps you could email me vice posting answers here on your guestbook - I would very much appreciate the opportunity to learn anything you could share. I am amazed by both the quality and variety of your pictures. If you are not a professional photographer, you should be. Since we're both Virginia residents, let me know when your next class schedule is. ;-)

Regards,

Steven

Hi Kai,
Wonderful photos. I am Kevin Gagliostro's (VDI) wife, "Rainy". I heard you recently won a photography contest- congratulations. I just did a google search and was led to your photos. You have outstanding talent. Email me sometime, I just bought a Digital Rebel SLR myself and am excited! Hope all is well...

Great work. I've only just begun my journey into the world of DSLR's and hope to be as good as you someday.

Thank you for posting your photos Dr. Kai Hui - I most especially enjoyed your birds; so many of the shots were absolutely breathtaking, better than being there in person! Detail is magnificent. Viewing your galleries was pure pleasure... I've become a fan of your work, and will be back to view more of your photographic art frequently. Thank you again!

I have been looking at your latest work - with the macro. What lens did you use for the real closeup shots? Any extenders?

Thanks,

Kai,
Your macro photos are some of the best I've seen on PBase. The colors are vivid and the subjects are crystal clear. Excellent work. You're an inspiration!

Kai,

Great photos - I am impressed. Check out some of Lara Bainbridge's photos on the Fairfax Audubon Website - she can take a great shots, too. (You met her at Mason Neck with me). At some point you may wish to sign up for Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory Field Trips - your photos would be welcome additions!

Hi Kai Hui,

Thanks for your comments your left on the DPreview gallery of my Snow Geese shots. Your galleries are very nice. We've been to Acadia NP a couple of times ourselves and love it there. I'm not sure where Lurry Cavern is even though we live in Pa (Harrisburg). We've been to Penn's Cave a couple of times.

Frank,
I saw your comments inmy profile page. I don't know which imgae you were referring. I am studying working on PBASE

Photos before 2003/09 were taken by Sony 707. There is only one lens which is fixed to the camera.

In Sept. of 2003 I bought Digital Rebel(My first SLR camera ever in my life). The lenses I have now: 18-55mm kit, 28-135mm IS, 75-300mm IS, 100mm macro, 50 mm f1.8 and 100-400mm L (However, I just got this lens. I haven't used it to shoot yet).

Thanks for the comments,

Kai
