Peace Images

Photos taken at various anti-war and peace events in Minneapolis and St Paul during the past few years (November 2002 to October 2007). The prolonged war in Iraq has enabled me to form this extensive collection of photos which has grown beyond what I ever imagined (and hoped) that it would.

correction: "caliphate"- the office or jurisdiction of an Islamic caliph (the male leader of an Islamic polity)

Do you and others really want an Islamic caliphate established in Iraq against the wishes of the people there? You remember, the same people who voted in droves for their present government despite acts and threats of terrorism against them. Remember them? And who now suffer daily at the hands of suicide bombers to their mosques?

EVERYONE wants peace?

EVERYONE wants peace? How naiive can a person get making such a statement?

Face it, there are bad people in the world, commonly known as Islamic terrorists, who wish to establish an Islamic cliphate across the "Muslim world", by force if they can get away with it, and establish what the Taliban created. Is that what you want? Did the Taliban "want peace"? Aren't they the ones who admittedly harboured bin Laden and allowed him to operate and plan the attack on the WTC?

Your (wishful) assertion is in error. A revision is in order.

It is interesting to note the followig;In the'60s,when apeace movement brought down a warhawk president & shortened an unnecessary,costly & bloody war,this country HAD A MILITARY DRAFT,one which allowed that ANYONE could be forced either to fight and possibly die,or be forced to flee america seeking haven elsewhere...THE VERY SELFSAME GENERATION THAT ACCOMPLISHED THE POLITICAL DESTRUCTION OF LYNDON JOHNSON & THE SHORTENING OF THE WAR IN VIET NAM NOW IN THE MAJORITY SUPPORTS A SIMILIARLY MISGUIDED WARHAWK PRESIDENT WHO IS FIGHTING ANOTHER UNNECESSARY,COSTLY & BLOODY WAR!
Could it be that that '60s generation supports the current war BECAUSE NEITHER THEY NOR THIER OFFSPRING ARE AT RISK OF HAVING TO FIGHT & PERHAPS DIE IN THE PROCESS?Most of the kids fighting & dying for George Bush and his corporate sponsors are poor,and also people of color...

I do think everyone should voluntarily stop buying petroleum products and walk everywhere. This would make the war for oil go away very quickly. Lets see how serious all these people are about hating war for oil mentality. Will they drive home from the protest rally?

I just came on this site I am at school and I was looking for pictures to print off the computer in order to pin them up to stop the violent attitudes that are being bred into tenagers these days!! I love this sight I am so glad that you people care like me. I wish we could some how rid the world of hatred and devastation

How ironic -- someone who promotes pre-emptive war (previous comment) is telling the left to educate themselves. I haven't dome a survey of educational levels of pro-war and anti-war activists, but I did a survey at a pro-war rally and an anti-war rally just before the 2nd Iraq war. I asked participants at each rally:

1) how did you hear about the rally?
2) what is your primary source of in depth news?

Answers:

Pro war rally participants heard about the rally from TALK RADIO. Their primary source of in depth news was either talk radio or FOX news. This shows they get their news from entertainment media. I would be embarassed to say that my primary source of in depth news was talk radio, but the particpants at the pro-war rally were proud of their response.

Anti-war rally: they heard about the rally from grass-roots ogranizations (emails and phone contacts). Their primary source of in depth news is not a single source:

examples: NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, BBC, NPR, Democracy Now, common dreams, etc.

Which group do you think is better informed?

If prior to the war, Bush would have made a decision to trade the places of American's women and children with those of Iraq, would there then have been a cry for intervention? Living next to a family from Iraq, and listening to a 10 year old child talk about the witnessing of his father's head being shot off in front of him, has changed my thoughts on the issue of war completely.
