The Italianate brick house was built in 1869 as the residence of Secretary of State Thomas P. Kennard, one of three commissioners who selected
Lincoln as the state capital. In 1965 the state legislature designated the Kennard House, located in Lincoln, as the
"Nebraska Statehood Memorial" and directed the Nebraska State Historical Society to restore it.
