Extremely enjoyable visit made even more pleasurable by your Sir Winston Churchill quote which reminded me of another of his that goes something like "it's a fact of nature that a dead bird doesn't fall from the nest". It was far more profound than just the circumstance in which he used it. Such is your work!

It's true. I do have a fascination for mannequins and puppets and all manner of sculpture representing life.
I am particularly drawn to decrepit and decaying mannequins. Their scars and dishevelled appearance convey a sense of having been used up. It's a metaphor for aging and growing closer to death. When one takes the time to look closely, they continue to reveal a bit of their youthful sparkle, yet they appear sad (to me); they're stuck in their perpetual states of composed indifference or happiness or whatever emotion they were created to sell. They're stuck forever trying to convince the passerby that they are still posh and viable despite their open wounds and messy get-ups, just like living persons.

Hi Kimberly,

Thank-you for the lovely comment you left me on my koi carp & lotus flower photo. Sorry I wasn’t able to reply earlier, but it’s been a busy couple of weeks.

You’ve got a terrific collection of photos yourself, great work.

Kind regards, Dominic

Kimberly,

Thank you for all your kind comments. Yes, it's all decay, but it's not all about decay if you know what I mean. I have taken it upon myself to be an amateur historian of these murals, many of which are in danger of disappearing altogether. Some of them I find incredibly poignant, even given the heavy symbolism involved. For that they may be forgiven, given that they are from the South Side of Chicago, which has suffered many heavy hands, not the least of which is racism. Your own pictures have the same spirit of life, of creativity, of not giving into the mundane. Warmly, John Matt

Hi Kimberley,
Thanks for your nice comments on my galleries. I appreciate all comments as I am new to both pbase and ditigal photography. Any suggestions are helpful and appreciated. Your work is great.

I got the 300mm lens for the Churchill trip, but it was too late for the numerous brown bears that we see here from spring to early fall. I can't wait for the bears to come out in mid-April and try it on them. I am also looking forward to the return of the humpback whales in late May.

I'm glad you liked the luminarias, they are a huge tradition in Albuquerque. The City turns out the street lights for huge areas of the city on Christmas Eve so people can enjoy the luninarias. Most of the photos you saw were taken at a church that puts out more than 6000 luminarias on Christmas Eve. These photos were taken by my adult daughter who received a new Rebel XT that evening for Christmas, and these were the first photos she took; and all of them were without a tripod. Quite a demonstration of how user friendly the XT can be.

Anyway, thanks again for visiting, I hope you make it to Churchill, the bears are spectacular.

Hi Kimberley,

It was very nice to get comments from a Vermonter…. I just love this place, so different from New York City.

I looked at your galleries, some are extremely nice, believe it or not, I have been to Stowe 4 times already, but always in the summer, so it was nice to see some winter images.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Hi Kimberley,
Thanks so much for your kind comments. I've only been a member here for 3 weeks so I'm still figuring out how everything works. You have made me aware that it is not just a matter of displaying pictures for my flar-flung friends and relatives to see. The pleasure of seeing comments from fellow members is just as satisfying. So the lesson is that I intend to spend some time whenever possible commenting on other people's work. You can expect some on your's too. From first impressions I would say we have a similar style of portraying things.

Thanks again and best wishes, Ralph

Hi you asked a question what sort of camera took the fly in mid air head on, it was a canon 300d with a 90mm lens taken manual focus, 800sec.

Hi Kimberley,
The image of the flower you asked about was photoshopped. it was originally deep blue but so saturated it had lost detail. So i worked it over a bit. in the end i thought it looked like a watercolor painting though i didn't use the any watercolor filters, just shpnd it, selected out certain areas and adjusted the curves and faded the glowing edges filter in a little.

say hi to stowe for me.

That is one crazy flower! Is that super saturated in PS or is that natural?
