The Sun Gate is in the direction of the Camino Inca Trail. The peak of the Machu Picchu mountain towers over the ruins on a saddle below it. It may be the highest level from which you can get a good view of the ruins, although Huayna Picchu also offers a great view.

There are some fantastic hikes possible at Machu Picchu, but we did not do any of them. Note that permits may be required for some of the hikes.
