Scorpionfly (Panorpa sp.)

These flies belong to the Order Mecoptera which also includes hanging flies. These are distinctive looking insects, with long faces that to me, look horse-like. This one is probably a female, as I don't see any evidence of the large scorpion-like male appendage that gives this group its name. Although the males look venomous, they cannot sting and are entirely harmless. The scorpionflies feed primarily on dead insects.
