Harmandia Galls on poplar leaf

This cluster of pretty galls is on a trembling aspen leaf (poplar). These galls are made by midges in the family Cecidomyiidae. According to Bug Guide, these particular midges are in the Genus Harmandia. Bug Guide also notes that "In late spring or summer, full-grown larvae drop to the ground to overwinter."
