Thistle head weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus)

Reveler Conservation Area

Found on Scotch thistle. According to Bug Guide, the species was introduced in 1969 to control the invasive musk thistle. It did so, but also moved onto native thistles.

Is that its natural colouration, or fungi on its back? Either way, it is a striking combination of black and green. (Not a well-thought or well-vetted introduction, by the sounds of it.)

wonderfully defined creature...sounds like an experiment gone wrong though...the bristles of the thistles abet the sense of tension...
