Ruffed grouse

Burnt Lands Provincial Park

late spring and summer are the times when baby birds are taking their first steps as here, or attempting their first flight. This is a Ruffed Grouse youngster. The mother flew up from the trail side and did her broken wing act to lure us away, meantime this youngster froze. I took a few photos and backtracked quickly away. Young birds face an incredible number of problems and usually only a few, or one, from a clutch survive. It is a fragile existence.

Terrific shot of the very young Grouse! The adults always give me quite a start when I come upon them in woods and they flush.

A really cute capture. Nature certainly does it best to keep the numbers steady between the generations but also provide food for others.

So cute and a treat to see a Ruffed Grouse and its chick. So many nests were destroyed in storm - three in our yard. Nice to see this little one survived.
