1976 Christine Hanrahan

Stonehenge

Wiltshire

One of the most recognized ancient sites, this sits on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. This shot was taken in 1976 with black and white film. I printed this image that same year, but unfortunately the negatives are long gone, and this print has seen better days. Still, it shows the site and how busy it was even then; impossible to get a photo without people.

That's an amazing site and great that you were there. I wonder how they got those slabs that weigh tons way up on top.

Great shot of this iconic site, and how lucky you were to have visited it. V.

A marvelous historic image for a memory. I never got to visit there growing up in England (might not have appreciated it then even if I had!)

A great photo for memories. We were living in England then and visited there but don't think I have any pictures.

Great shot from almost fifty years ago. Fascinating view with all the people and it looks like they've done more restoration work since then. "V"

Back then, you could walk in the inner circle and get close to the stones. This is much earlier than the various times I've visited and looks like more of the "real experience." I find the site absolutely fascinating, even in more modern times with all the tourist development. You were lucky to visit when you did. So many places around the world have changed to encourage more tourism, and this is one.

Still a lovely shot of this famous landmark.

well, the place has been attracting visitors for 5,000 years after all....at least it wasn't roped off back in the 1970s, and you could walk among the sarsens..
