El Templo Conventual de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (the Monastery Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is located seven blocks southwest of the Zócalo de Puebla, the city’s central plaza. After arriving in Puebla in 1586, the Carmelite frairs were given a chapel in the south of the city. The monastery was built on the property between 1625 and 1634. |
As was common in Mexico during the 19th century, the interior was reconstructed in the neoclassic style. The exterior surface decorations are a more recent renovation. Following a style used in many buildings in central Puebla, the walls surfaced with a combination of bricks in a herring-bone pattern and Talavera tiles. |
