I see beautiful birds in the hills not far from our place in Plaridel, Quezon. Sadly, I don't know any of them. They feed on wild bananas with big seeds. Incidentally, my mother is from Bauang, La Unin.

Good afternoon Romy.
I was so fascinated with all your photos especially the ones that were taken at Baroro and Bacnotan since these towns were my grandparents (on my mother's side) used to live and I have spent every summer vacation with them until I came to USA in 1987. I was born in Baguio City. My hobbies were photography and watercolor painting. I was a member of the Baguio Group of Artists from 1978 to 1987.

I ran across your site trying to find out an uncommon singing bird beside my house in a very small green patch. I always wake up with their singing in the morning and try to watch them afar from my bedroom window. I'm guessing their Bulbul or the plain brown shrike. What's your guess? Rai of Las Pinas

Hello. Just wanted to tell you when I first seen your work about 3 years ago it inspired me to improve my birding skills. I said to myself "if he do it, I can do it". You were my bench mark. Then it was how does he do it? I don't think I'll ever get to your level or need to. I'm very happy with what I am doing now. This included post processing that helped me improve my other areas of photography as well.

Hi Romy;

Thanks for sharing your great collection of photos! I also like the pictures of you with your equipment. I also use the Manfrotto Gimbal Mount and love it. Would you mind if I occasionally linked to this site to show other photographers what a load the manfrotto mount will accomodate. I have never seen it used with a larger camera/lens package.

By the way, I recently noticed a neat flash bracket for the Manfrotto Gimbal which can be fabricated very simply and works very well. I lost the information regarding the inventor so, I cannot post the image since I cannot give him credit.

However, I will be glad to email the image to you.

Hi Romy! Went through your Candaba gallery. Amazing shots. I was planning to go with my son to Candaba to check out the birds. What DSLR do you use and what lenses do you normally carry for Candaba? Do you try to use your flash for fill-in as often as possible or does it scare the birds away? Is a tripod SOP or just a monopod? I used to be a photo-addict during the analog days and still have an old 500mm mirror but only have a Sony point and shoot digicam with a built-in 436mm optical zoom. Will that do for regular daylight shots? I know it's no comparison to a DSLR but it's all I've got for now. Sorry for all the questions but seeing your shots really made me reminisce about my nature photog days.

Cheers and all the best!

Ka Romy
I was born in Candaba and spent my (playing) childhood in Candaba swamp 40 years ago. Though there are still surviving migratory birds these days, but compared then, i.e. the "White Herons" covers the sun when their countles flocks fly over the swamp in V-formation into 3 to 4 batches with couple of minutes intervals. Wish you were born on those times and captured the magnificent images. Presence of several species are no longer seen during my last few years in Candaba, I doubt they are all extinct now. I was 10 years old the last time I saw one black "Maria Cafra" in the wilds of Candaba. Birds are better seen flying in the sky rather than framed. Stop the killings, impose permanent ban on wild hunting for "ten thousand years".

Thanks, Jose. We have several members of the Wild Bird Club of the Phils. (WBCP -http://www.birdwatch.ph/ ) based in Cebu City, and they are more or less familiar with the known areas where the Cebu Flowerpecker and Black Shama are recently seen. I'll relay to them about Daanbantayan, and if there's no record yet about your area, it's probably time to check it out. I'm planning to go to Cebu for a birding sweep after the rainy season (November onwards). Thanks for the valuable info, will update you on my sked and if your area is already surveyed/recorded. Regards, Romy
Jose Yongco 30-May-2006 08:35
Hello again, Romy.

I am not sure if there is that much info out there with regards to the black shama but I can certainly volunteer to you about what I have observed abot this bird first hand years ago.

Romy, when I was around Grad 3- 4, that was also the time when I was so much into trapping quails and rails for the childhood adventure of it. It just so happened that at that tine there was also so much interest about the black shama and one time I saw a spread in a local paper ( the Freeman, I believe) about this bird and in fact that spread was sponsored by Marlboro as an infomercial. That was my howinterest in this bird was first sparked and I have tried to be very observant of this bird whenever I can back then, roaming the woods, doing childhood stuff.

The bird is konwn locally as "siloy nga karaan" ( a Cebuano term to mean "old siloy") to contrast it with a more common bird called "siloy" that looks much different, but has somewhatof the same song but just not as melodious as the black shama.

I am not sure of this bird's range in the Cebu province but I am from Daanbantayan, the northernmost town of Cebu. The area, our own land where I used to observe this bird is still much forested ( even more so the last time I visited > 2 years ago) as people have been farming less and had other livelihoods.

Just let me know and of course our acreage would be open to your full access in case you need to. All I need to do is call my folks out there and tell them to.

Thank you again.

Jose
romy ocon30-May-2006 02:38
Thanks for visiting, Jose. The Black Shama and Cebu Flowerpecker, both found only in Cebu and critically endangered, are two of the birds I'd like to photograph in my next visit to Cebu. Hopefully, I can go there after the rainy season this year. Regards, Romy
Jose 29-May-2006 22:19
Hello, Romy. You are doing such a great service to humanity just by doing what you have been doing, capturing images of Philipppine birds and fostering interest in Philippine wildlife and hopefully, conservation.
Romy, I am originally from Cebu, Phils and now living in CA, USA. Have you thought of capturing the Cebu black shama in film? I know this bird is in the endangered list. As a young child growing up in the Cebu countryside, I am however familiar of the incomparable melody of this bird's song.

Thank you.

"Romy, Thanks for sharing your infro again. All three lenses seem rather interesting. Understand the Canon 500 f4 L IS lens permits the use of autofocus when using an extender. Do you think Canon 600 f4 L IS also function the same way?"

Yes, both the 600 f4 and 500 f4 will AF with a 1.4x TC on any Canon dslr, and these can AF as well with a 2x TC on the 1D bodies.

"Can autofocus still function with the Sigma 300-800 when fix with an 1.4x extender.
Autofocus function working with Canon 1.4x extender is a must for me as I have problem with manual focusing by looking through the small view finder."

No... there's a slight AF incompatibility issue with the EOS-mount Sigmonster and Sigma 500 f4.5. AF will not be possible with an "intelligent" 1.4x TC (like Sigma or Canon) even with the AF-at-f/8-capable 1D bodies. AF is possible with "dumb" TCs like the Tamron 1.4x on both the 1.6 CF and 1d series.

romy ocon25-Apr-2006 22:56
David, I'd assume you need a longer one than your 100-400 5.6L IS. In that case, you can consider the f4 primes - Canon 500 f4 L IS or 600 f4 L IS. If you want zooming flexibility with extreme reach, and can live with tripod-only shooting and without IS, the Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800) works very well. Romy
David Ng 25-Apr-2006 18:11
Hi Romy,
Thanks for your reply.
I use to shoot bird with my Canon 10D mounted with canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS
using the Auto Focusing mode with success but Not with Canon extender EF 1.4X added.
What is your advice for any telephoto lens (in-addition to what I already have) when added with 1.4x and still able to use auto focus mode.
I understand one of your photos was taken in my country, Singapore Yishun Estate.
I would like to join you for a shoot when you visit Singapore again.
Best wishes,
David Ng
romy ocon23-Apr-2006 12:44
David, the cheaper Tamron 1.4x is not wired to be seen by the camera, hence AF at f/8 is attempted and works surprisingly well with the 400 5.6L + 20D/350D/300D. Romy
David Ng 23-Apr-2006 10:46
Your pics are a wonder to view.
Would like to know whether you use Auto or Manual Focusing when you use your 400 5.6L +
Tamron 1.4 TC.
Thanks.

Dear Romy,
You have put together so many superb galleries which are a great labour of love - and we the PBase community are the fortunate beneficiaries.
Your "Best fliers" gallery is quite magnificent.
You have succeeded admirably in performing all the 'critical tasks' to ensure brilliant captures.
I have no doubt that the fantastic results are more due to great technique and talent than mere luck.
Congratulations.
Looking forward to many more wonderful images from you.
I would appreciate your comments and advice on my "Fauna" and other galleries.
Best wishes,

I have hunted game birds since I was a child and I fairly know most, if not all of the endemic species of pigeons here in the Phillippines. After seeing your photos, I can say that they are more beautiful alive and protected than dead. There is though a plump pigeon with long tail and brown-reddish color found only in the forests of Mayon Volcano in Albay and is locally known as kubawon, that got my attention. Because after all those years, it is the first time, yet in flight, that I ever saw them. I hope you could take photographs of this pigeon.

Your photos never cease to amaze me. I am very new to photography and have a liking for taking photos of birds in our area. One of the members noticed that I liked taking photos of birds and pointed me to this website ... I have never stopped looking ever since I learned about this. Thank you so much for sharing all these wonderful images. You inspire us all to appreciate God's creation more :-)

Romy, I first saw your pictures on the bird forum and saw you were shooting with Sigmas 300-800 with and without TC 1.4 & 2x. All I can say is your one of the best bird photographers I have seem. My first reaction was wow I have to have that lens but when I saw your pictures with the other lenses including my 1000-400 L I knew it was 90 % photographer. I have to say even the Tamron cheapy beat out the 100-400L. In any event thanks for sharing your pictures. Do you think the 300-800 is a good route to go now that you have had it for a while or should I set my sights on Canon's 500 F4. If you could I would appreciate ypour opinion. My email is phil@weichert.com.

hi!
I'm happy to hear that there are now people in our country that admire nature...

Here in California we really respect nature...I work night shift and everytime I take my lunch break in my car... A friendly Racoon will always approach me and wait for food...

Keep up the good work kabayan...

The ones in the American Cemetery gallery are perched at an acacia tree. The others, I could not recall the type or name of tree. Thanks for visiting.
