Hullo, I am in Queensland but last saw Sheerness when I was 10, 70 years ago. My family were mostly in Blue Town from about 1800. Does anyone know where Edward Street passage was in Blue Town? Any old maps? (could not find one online).

I was born in minster hospital may 29th 1946. My grandfather was Charlie Gillespie and he worked at the dockya. My Mum was Catherine Gilespie. When she was growing up she lived in Bluetown I think On West St.My Mum was one of 5 sisters and one brother Jimmy. I can remember going to Jacob's fish and chips, the children's wading pool, and playing on the beach. I attended Broadway Girls Schol and my only sibling Jon wnt t Delaware Rd School. 1956-57. We moved to Canada when I was 11 yrs old but my heart resides in Sheerness.

Ruth Bär née Hammond - BIG QUESTION???
Can anyone help me trace this song. It was practiced with the Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, Brownie Group around 1957 0r very early 1958. It may come from a musical or operette as Tawny Owl and possibly Brown Owl too, was in a Musical Group of some kind. We Brownies were supposed to be taking part in a musical performance as "Sprites of the Night" but the closing of the dockyard put an end to that. I remember this part of the song and that we were to prance around and stamp our right foot on the word „wrong“.

Sprites of the night are we, are we,
laughing and singing merrily,
Never happy, never happy but when things go wrong.

Boys and girls we love to tease.
Grown ups we rob of all their ease
Never happy, never happy but when things go wrong.

Second line may have been - laughing and dancing or even prancing
There could also have been one or two more verses but this is all I can remember and I have tried googling to no avail.

Maybe there is a Brownie somewhere with a better memory than mine.

Hi Geoff Wheatly and Trevor Edwards, I used to live in Clyde Street in the 1950´s. I was 4 when the flood came and remember Uncle Frank coming to rescue us as his house in Invicta Rd was high and dry. Uncle Frank took my sister Carol, 3 yrs old on his back as Dad did with me. Mum carried Norah then two yrs old and we all waded away. Everyone slept upstairs that night because of the flood warning. I and Carol had sat on the top of the stairslooking at a couple of potatoes and an apple floating around in the water below. I am said to have announced, "Oh good! we can learn to swim in the living-room now!"
One big request my I use your photo in a family chronical I am working on for my four children and six grandsons please??? We stayed with Uncle Frank and our Grandma in Invicta Rd for six months and later moved to Alma Road before going to Scotland 1959 when the dockyard closed.

Hi, I'm Stuart Murray. The other day I was thinking about schools I attended and Delamark Road school was one of them. I entered the name and got to this site and was amazed to find my name mentioned twice - by Maurice Majurey on 7/9/2017 and Peter Lee 19/4/2020. Maurice lived on St Georges Avenue near to Wheatsheaf Gardens where both Peter and I lived. I attended the school from 1951-1955 when I went to the Jefferson Road school for two year and then to the Tech until I left in 1960.I remember Delamark Road school teachers Mr Stockwin, Mr Partis and Mr "Spud" Spencer who would read to us stories of Dr Dolittle! Mr Pegg, I think, took us for games and we played Shinty in the playground. Other names I remember are Peter Thomson who was my "buddy" when I first joined the school, David Ross,Jeffery Monk, Ian McCourt and Graham Church who I still exchange Christmas Cards with. One notable event was when a Dakota trailing a traget flew over the playground with its wing on fire! Someone had missed the target but hit the plane! I can remember "Polly" Pontin, the headmaster (who lived on the A249 near Hayes Lane, to which school coach trips were despatched for nature trips)

Mr. Jennings (and his teacher-daughter) who taught English. He had a lovely northern accent and pronounced the "g" in words that ended in "...ing". His favourite poem was 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, and we enjoyed him narrating it to us: "...The Highwayman came riding-g riding-g up to the old Inn door...".

Does anyone have any photographs of the Delamark Road school before it was demolished ?

Her father William Staveley owned a florist in the high street.

Does anyone remember the name of the old fashioned restaurant that was in Sheerness High Street at the end where the amusements were (on the same side of the road as the amusements). It had an upstairs and a skylight in it that used to leak.

My RAF friend, Pete Gwylliam, was born in Gillingham Maternity hospital in 1931.( I was born there in 1930). His father, also in the RAF, was stationed on Sheppey. I presume, attached to the RN Air Service there, for he was involve with " seaplanes". Can anyone add to this please?

If anybody can help. I was born in Sheerness and lived there for 10 years. 1949-1959 when we left and immigrated to Australia. I found an old photo of Mile town primary school but have no recollection of going to this school. Does any body know where it was located.
I was born in Broad St and later moved to Jefferson rd. Went to school in a Methodist church for a while before going to Delamark School.

I fear that Delamark Road School is just a figment of the imagination of those of us who went there! Like Mike, I was there very early 50's and remember 'Spud' Spencer (firm but fair) who had two canes in his cupboard: "William the Conqueror" and "Tickle Toby". If you were for it, he would invite you to select your weapon. No doubt, horrifying to the Politically Correct but I don't think that we suffered any of the 'trauma' and 'need for thereapy' that the PCs now seem to regard as mandatoory if only a car backfires and the entire school have to be treated! Happy Days!

PS: If Stuart Murray ex. Weatsheaf Gdns sees this, I did try to get in touch previously but failed.

Hi, was just having a look at your site to have a look at where my grandmother was from. Her name was Edna May Pennell before she married and was born 1925. She lived in Sheerness until roughly 1953. I think her parents were called George and Frances. Her siblings were Arthur, Phyllis and Dorothy. Her mother ran a house as a b&b at some point. Never heard from her again after they went to australia in 1966. Her grandmother still lived in sheerness i think when they went. Have you any news.

Hi Sean, yes, it was in Victory St, which ran from High St to Railway Rd, It is now a pizza joint!!!! I left Sheerness in Jan 62 to join the RN lived in various places since then finally settled in Weymouth 1980, can't keep away from the seaside :) Regards Geoff

Wow, it's so amazing to hear from someone who knew my mum and dad (mum passed away in 1976, and dad in 84) My Youngest sisters, Sheridan and Samantha (twins obviously!) were born on Dec 7th..... I was only 11 when I moved from the island, I don't think Dad wanted to go, but did they close Featherstones down or something? My mum too loved the island.....I do remember them loving the Playa club and the True Brit (was that it's name?) pub. It's amazing you were in the next room to my mum, I'll share your post with Sheridan And Sam.....we still pop down to the Island occasionally, I always consider it "where I grew up" and thank you for your kind words about mum and dad, they've been gone so long now it's really nice to hear from someone who remembers them so fondly...

Oh gosh Sean, my Mum, May Charlesworth worked at Featherstones for years in the Ladies Fashion Dept when your Dad was there and I did for a while too in the shoe department. It was a fabulous place to work and we were one big happy family and we all loved your Dad! Also I was in Minster Maternity Unit in the next room to your Mum in 1966 having my son Rob and she gave me so much confidence as I was so nervous having my first baby so I wonder which one of your siblings was born that year in December 1966? Great site, I lived with my mum, dad and 10 brothers & sisters in the high St, and then we moved up to Love Lane in Minster. My brother Gary worked in Jacobs, the chip shop, and my sister Leslie loved Morellis. My Dad, Joe Alexander was Manager of Featherstones in the Broadway in the mid sixties till '72 when we moved to Stevenage. My sister Deborah worked at Abbots ( up near Queenborough I think) I went to school at Minster primary, then the all boys middle school at Jefferson road. I have nothing but great memories of the island. My mum and dad (Joe and Vera) loved the Playa club..........

A great site. I was born in Minster Hospital in 1942 and later lived at 1 Vincent Gardens, I went to Holy Trinity Infants School and still have a school photo taken in 1949, if anyone has the same photo, I am in the back row, third from the left.. My parents and I left for Sydney Australia in November 1949 and my first trip back to Sheppey was in 1998.
I went to have a look at the school which was attached to the Church and it had all gone. The co-op building was being pulled down when I was there. I would like to hear from any one who was at the infants school in 1948 or 1949

Hi, my Great Grandparents John (known as Jack) and Emily Pelling during their retirement, lived at Halfway Rd from early 1930's until their deaths in early 1970's. Loved the photos which brought back memories of many wonderful childhood visits from our then home in Middlesex. My Gt. Grandfather Jack Pelling was born in Queenborough and had several siblings who may have descendants still on the island. Jack and Emily moved to Kingston upon Thames during a period when Gt Grandfather was a police officer in London however returned to his roots upon retirement and played golf every day until shortly before his death in his mid nineties. During his retirement he was a committed member of Sheerness Conservative club and had one or two stints as Chairman.

What number in Jefferson Rd? I used to live in 103. I was a little boy there during the 53 flood. I remember the house was never the same again. The damp got hold, and we could not shift it. My dad even lined the walls with asbestos!!! Surprising I'm still here.

Hi, I was thrilled to discover this wonderful trip down memory lane! I am Carol Charlesworth, was born in our house in Park Road in 1945. I have a sister Relda and a brother John. My mother May Charlesworth worked in Featherstones Dept Stores and then in Seeboard. I also went to Holy Trinity School and remember the very strict Mrs Evans! I then went to Sheerness Secondary School and, in my opinion, had a very good education which held me in good stead for excellent jobs throughout my life, including an office job with the lovely 'Olau Line'. I left Sheppey long ago and live in Dorset now but still visit my sister and her husband and pop in on friends every few months. I have fabulous memories of my happy and safe childhood on our lovely island and it makes me so sad to see how the town has deteriorated as it could become another 'Whitstable' once people realise what a beautiful area it could be with some clever investment. A direct train link to London like the old days would be a start and Shrimp Terrace, for example, could be transformed! The sea always gets the blue flag and could be an excellent seaside town to rival any of the other South Coast favourites - so hope the Council wake up to it soon. Hi, this is Ruth Bär, nee Hammond now living in Hersbruck in southern Germany. I was Born in Minster maternity Hospital in 1948. my parents were Kathleen nee Birch and Albert Hammond who lived in Clyde Str. and after the flood moved to Alma Rd. before going to Scotland when the Dockyard closed down. After attending the Alma Rd school for two years I went to the Holy Trinity school until we left for Scotland. I remember miss Hoffmann who was possibly Dutch. She sneezed once and her false teeth shot out. We six and seven year olds laughed (it was too funny!) and were punished with a maths lesson instead of sport. I did not mind prefering maths anyway. I also well remember miss Tippett, she did most to improve my writing skills - a fantastic teacher, also miss Woodard (who took a dislike to me - I have no idea why), a miss Thompson who later married and had a foreign surname and of course miss Evans the headmistress. She once lined the girls up and gave each one a small drop of Orange blossom smelling scent she had been given as a gift. We could choose to have it applied behind an ear or on a wrist. Childrens names I remember are John and David Knight, Azen Webb, Janice Hammond, Janet Ragout, Catherine Lancaster, Rosemary Miller, Wendy Frazer... My family took in foster children from around the area and far away, many came from Nigeria, one from India and one boy was a German lad whose mother had married an English man. I have some school photos but not of the school itself only one of school children lined up with harvest offerings at a school service in Holy Trinity Church.

Yes, Mr Davies, you are correct in saying there were three picture houses on the island. They were The Ritz, The Rio and the Argosy. Although, I left the island years ago, I understand The Rio was pulled down, The Ritz may have been pulled down, and the Argosy, that, as far as I know, is still standing, but it may be a bingo hall.

I know this is a long shot but does anyone know of a Greengrocers at 2 High Street Mile Town, this would have been in the very early 1900's. I recently found out that my GreatGrandfather William Charles Miller (originally from Ramsgate) was manager of the shop when his third child Margaret Lilian was born in 1905. It would be really great if any one knows of this shop or if there are any photos of it.

My eyes lit up when I saw the name Firth. Went to school with a lynn firth. We were best friends. She and her family went to australia in 1966. I was heartbroken. She promised to write and I never heard from her again. We were the same age and a have a treasured item she gave me.i used to see her grandmother in the town and she always said she never heard from them again. Always wonder about her. I stayed with her every school holiday and have fond memories of always going to the amusement arcade on Marine Parade and playing PacMan, Defender and the 2p and 10p machines!
My Dad would often take me to watch Sheppey United when they played at St Georges Avenue and he would stop for a pint in the pub next door.
I went back to Sheerness yesterday and stood on the beach front and remember being there as a child at the Sheerness Carnival when the Zulu's used to chase us up the beach.

Jacobs fish bar/Amusements
The brothers who ran the fish bar were called Bert & Edward Jacobs. As far as I'm aware they never married and lived together in Minster. Steve's and my grandad was called James and had seven children.
They used to do pony rides outside the amusement park in the sixties, which was my favourite part!

Re fish and Chip shop and amusement park.
I anSteve Jacobs , julie's older brother born july 1952 in bluetown now living in Jersey. My grandfather was one of the brothers who worked in the family run buisness at the fish shop near the station named jacobs fish bar. I remember the walls on both sides were hand painted with scenes from under the sea with mermaids etc.

The amusement site was owned by a guy called Parkin. I went to alderney a few years ago to price some work at a house and in the garage were two big white swans which used to be on a ride at sheerness funfair. He was still alive and must be in his 90 's . He kept the swans as a reminder when he sold the land. Behind the funfair roller coaster was an old bombed out zoo and fort where i used to play as a kid.

What a wonderful set of pictures and information!!! WOW. Thought the only place all that stuff lived was in my head! I lived at the Duke of Clarence, 8 High Street, Bluetown, Sheerness from 1948 until we moved to Leysdown in 1958. I remember the Crisp factory which was at the back of our property with the large tins ready to be packed with individual bags of crisps (the days when the salt was wrapped in a tiny piece of blue paper). My father, George Parlane bought The Duke of Clarence and turned it into a cafe which attracted the soldiers from the garrison and the sailors from the Dockyard. I remember the mass of men on bicycles going past our door to and from the dockyard. I attended Holy Trinity or The National School in the fifties when Mrs Evans reigned supreme followed everywhere by her white fluffy dog, Timmy. At least it was Timmy then, maybe she had several dogs over the years. Other teachers then were a Miss Hoffman, a Miss Woodard, and a Miss Tippett. The buildings were Victorian with high windows and in the playground were some brick-built air-raid shelters left over from the second world war. There were no climbing frames or other equipment in the playground but we had a wonderful time with skipping, hopscotch, ball games and other imaginary games. Every Thursday morning we would be marched round the corner to the church ... I remember reading aloud there when I was ten and at other times one of the teachers, a Miss Cox, later Mrs Stride would sing beautifully. I remember the little wooden chairs and tables and the massive sliding doors which partitioned off the classrooms. It was mostly a happy time although the present generation of children would not take kindly to the sharp slaps for the slightest misdemeanor. We were free to be children then, we roamed happily playing outside with friends with no danger of strangers. My own grandchildren have so many more material things but are necessarily over-protected. I seem to recall there was a plaque on the wall stating that the school had been built in 1837. I was disappointed when I visited Sheppey so me twenty years ago to find the building had been demolished and the site was ... a car park.

My Granddad ( a retired Royal marine ) died in the early 1950's but my Gran continued to live there with her son Brian. Hi. My name is Stefan Rantzow, 49 year of age, and I come from a town in south Sweden, named Malmö. I am writing a book about a Swedish woman namned Elizabeth Stride who moved to London in 1866. What a great site for going down memory lane for Islander's. I lived there from birth until 1963 and my mother still does. My father helped run the youth club at Queenborough when we lived there. We then move to Queensway and later Nelson Close Sheerness. I worked part time for Matthews the butchers taking meat by a "trade bike" to Minster on Saturdays. I was in the St Johns Ambulance Brigade and went to Sheerness Technical School until 1963. Love local history of which the Island has loads.

Yes, the manager of Woolworth was Mr Whelan (Mick Whelan), and although, a small child at the time, even now I can remember him with a large cigar as something of a permanent fixture. My parents knew Mr and Mrs Whelan, who had two sons. I've forgotten the name of the eldest son, but, the younger son was named Roger and dated (maybe married?) a very pretty redhead living in Minster, named May Devine, whose father was, I think a prison officer at Eastchurch prison.

Does anyone else remember Woolworth, pram park. In the mid 60s , it was not unusual to park baby just out side the store doors, while mum shopped inside. Every one knew one another, and baby was always safe.i believe the manager was Mr Whelan. He always smoked a cigar.

Regarding chip shops. The one I always used was up at the railway station end of the high street. On the right hand side of the road heading that way, very close to a pub, maybe the Goat. You could look through the back at where their family lived. There was usually an old lady sitting down at the back in view of the counter. I remember their old clock ticking away on the wall by where she was sitting.

Bacca's resturant was next to the goat (pub) near the railway station. It was owned by two sisters. I often had a babies head (steak & kidney pudding) followed by an apple pudding. Cost for the meal was half - a -crown. That was in 1953.

To Stephen Debell - The blacksmiths arms was my dad's local pub. He was Ted Bentley the bus driver. I used to go in there a lot as a small boy. I also went to Delemark Rd primary from approx 1957 to 1961 I would guess.

I have been trying to find photographs of the National School Sheerness next to Holy Tinity Church and have had not any success so far. Mrs Evans who was headmistress when I attended did live in Alexandra Road not far from where I lived her house was one of three set back with a frontage next to the alley. She had a daughter who married and had a daughter (I think her grandaughter was called Helen maybe wrong) but cannot remember Mrs Evans daughters name but not Bunty. Her daughter lived in Alexandra Road as well on the same side of the road but nearer to Mile Town School. I think her daughter was a teacher and married a teacher. When the school became unsafe in the 60s we attended classes at the Methodist church in the Broadway. One class took place in the hall above the room with a stage and the other classroom was held in the back hall which had a kitchen and toilets leading of it. We used the alleyway as our playground but so narrow but better than nothing never thought about it at the time. I remember performing plays on the stage upstairs and when I had a daughter many years later she attended ballet and tap classes in the hall with a stage and the stage looked exactly the same as when I attended there and the same colour paint but the hall seemed to have shrunk! I also remember going into Trinity Church for Harvest Festival taking a shiny marrow that my pop had polished for the occasion. Sadly I also remember filing into church solemly for the memorial service for Julie Brend who was killed on the railway lines at the crossing at Westminster hence there is a footbridge in place there now although Westminster community was raised to the ground many years ago.
In respect to Mile Town School this is still standing although has been turned into apartments.

Hi, was just having a look at your site to have a look at where my grandmother was from. Her name was Edna May Pennell before she married and was born 1925. She lived in Sheerness until roughly 1953. I think her parents were called George and Louise. Her siblings are Arthur, Phyllis and Dorothy. That is all the info I have at the moment. I remember the National School form 1958.

I don't have very fond memories of Mrs Evans, she was unfair and very strict. I can't bear to hear Scarlet Ribbons which she taught us to sing. She used to hit children with rulers when they failed to pray in an upright positon and children used to pass out .

I went to Delemark Road primary school in the late '50s. I don't remember the gates being shut, but maybe I was just a good boy. They certainly did have large gates that stretched right across the end of the dead-end road. The headmaster was mr ponton.

Anyone recognise the name of this schol - I lived in Raneleigh Road (# 27) in early 50's so I was only 5-7 years old when I attended. From memory, the school had big gates at the front which were closed on the dot of 9.00am so all the late comers would be stuck outside, rounded up and no doubt some sort of punishment handed out to them.
The school must have been fairly close to home as my small legs couldn't walk all that far.
I'm thinking Delamark Road but I'm not sure. We migrated to Australia in 1955 but have been back a couple of times to Sheerness but can find no trace of the school.

Hi Trevor, a great site and library of photographs. I lived here with parents & elder brother from 2 - 13 yrs old & also went to the National school. Mrs. Evans was my head but she had been a teacher there, with Miss Dover when my mum was at school there. Gordon, my borther went to Delamark Rd & then the Technical School with Mr.Barnett as head. My grandfather, Len Parker, was at the Bottleworks for 30 yrsand my mum worked in the office there when she was 16 & then went on to do nursing at Pembury then Minster. My grandparents Len & Nellie Parker lived in Berridge Rd, my aunt, Norma Causby was in Invicta Rd & so were we. I was born in Minster in 1965, to a kiwi ( New Zealand) Mum and British Dad.Due to my Mums homesickness in 1971 we all emigrated to New Zealand. I still have great memories of the Island, especially Leysdown where we lived. My Nanny and Popeye ( Charles and Barbara Harvey )ran the deckchairs and other things, while Aunts and Uncles had pubs and chippies. I am finally taking my teaching degree, and have been asked to do an assignment on my early school schooling. I went to Miletown primary ( where my Mum also taught ). I am unable to find any information on the primary, so I am assuming it is well gone! If anyone had a photo they could post I would really appreciate this.

As a child I spent many a holiday on the island (1950's/ 1960's) then in 1965 ( Moods and Rocker era) I got myself a motorbike and continued with my trips to Sheerness. Spent many a happy hour in the Station cafe. Would sleep rough either in the old dockyard or on the beach. Has anyone got any pics taken around that time. Further to John Barber's comments on the national school. I went there in the 1950s and remember Mrs Evans had a daughter called Margaret. She was always saying that I looked exactly like her Margaret. Maybe that's why I always got picked to take the dog (Judy) for a walk. I remember she lived in Alexandra Rd next to the alley but I cant remember the number. Such a shame there doesn't seem to be any photos of the school. I cant recall having any class photos during my time there.

James Ashby Fire Stations My father, Sub Officer A.E. Clark ( retained) was in charge of Queenborough part time fire station from 1945 until 1970. Recently I passed on some photoes of the crews to Mrs L Vine 8, North Road, Queenborough. who runs the Queenborough Society.
The fire station was housed in an old garage in North Road just beyond the working men,s club until the late 1960,s when a new purpose built station was opened in Whiteway Road.

Further to my message of 26 Oct concerning my grandparents Edward and Gladys Kirby and their tenancy of The Navy and Army pub in Bluetown, I have established that he arrived in 1934 and left only a year later. Apparently, there was accommodation for sailors at the pub and when they took it over the bedrooms and bedding were absolutely flea-infested and my Grandfather had to hire men to take the mattresses and bedding down to the sea to submerge them in salt water to kill off the infestations. Further, I believe that for whatever reason the merchant ships stopped coming to Sheerness at around that time so his business floundered. That was when he left for the Hare and Hounds at Northbourne. I do see people with my surname being mentioned in your pages but I do not think they are necessarily related to my branch of the family, which came from The Romney Marshes.

Q for Gee about the start of Canning Town Glass works. Workers came down from Tutbury (Staffs) about 1911/12 to build the factory. Names included, Salt, King, Pegg and my g/father George Acethorpe who wa a blacksmith. He ended up working at Lodders and died in 1944. Do you have any other information/

I would like to contribute to the messages about the National School. I wonder if anyone knows if Mrs Evans had a daughter named Bunty? When the war broke out they must have closed the school, as I clearly remember having lessons in the Masonic Hall in St. Georges avenue. Then later having lessons in Miss Dover's front room. She took classes of about 6 children for an hour each day. I thought she lived in Winstanley road but my mate Barry Holmes ( he lives in NZ) who also recalls attending these lessons assures me she lived in Alexandra rd. She used to knit balaclavas for the seamen crossing the cold north atlantic, and each one she finished she tried it on the boys.Also I remember Miss Miles& miss Skinner.

Just a minor correction to Susan Field/Duff's reference to Mrs. Evan's dog at Trinity Nat. School, I recall that it was called "Judy" and was therefore a she! Do you also recall Mrs. Evan's old cohort, Miss Dover? She wore quite old Victorian style dress and seemed to be as ancient as the school! A sort of early Minnie Bannister!

I had a great time remeniscing while looking at your photos. I was born in Sheerness at my home in Halfway Road. I went to the Trinity School. Before that I went to Alexandria Infants school. I remember Mrs Evans very well the headmistress at Trinity. I was often called upon to feed her dog and give him a bowl of milk daily. I remember singing Scarlet Ribbons & Little Donkey (carry Mary). My parents often spoke of the "Flood". I think it was just before I was born. We left dear sheppey in 1961 to emmigrate to Australia. Would anyone have photos of trinity school? Went I returned for a visit the school had gone! My name at before marriage was Susan Duff. I have 3 sisters & two brothers.

John was closest to Peggy whom we visited regularly when living in London. Annie we only saw when we met up on our annual visits to Nan. I enjoyed this site my mothers family lived on the Island for hundreds of years,the Susans and Featherstones.My Grandfather Walter Susans lived in James Sreet when i was young my brother,sister and i spent most of the school holidays staying with our Grandparents.My Grandfathers parents lived in a house called sea view at Barton Hill,his father was killed on the Princess Irene .I was born in the old hospital at minster.I still have my Grandfathers photographs of his friends the Allison family,Hodson-Walkers,George Brown,an H may who lived at 46 Ranleigh rd and Bill Phyll,Granpas brother Bob lived at 9 Carlton Rd he had a vast collection of photographs of the island,he had worked in the docks but also wrote articles for the local paper.

My mother was born in the Navy & Army pub in 1903 and lived until she was nearly 102 years old. Her name was Winifred Parnham. Her grandparents owned several pubs in Sheerness including the Crown Hotel and she spent many years as a barmaid in the Royal Hotel. Her grandparents names were John and Hannah-maria Parnham.

Hello June and Lynne (Nee Matthews) my mother was Marjorie Helen Matthews and often spoke of her brothers Ron and Jack. Sadly contact was very limited and I cannot recall ever meeting them. The sisters did contact each other from time to time although as they got older this became less frequent. When Mum passed away we fulfilled her wish to scatter her ashes off Sheerness Pier. I now live on the outskirts of Chatham and often sail round Sheppy. When you have fixed your arrangements for the "Sheerness Pilgrimage" perhaps we could meet up and swop stories.

Hi Liz John Barber spotted your post and emailed me. Good to hear from you, cannot believe however that you froze watching our water polo games, what about the poor players. The Wheatsheaf and VC dances were good always look forward to at the weekend, all the guys congregated at the Castle pub it was our club house, we never got to the dance until 10.45. Hi, I'm doing my family history and found that my great grandfather married Emily Kicks in 1903 and the Kicks family lived at 10 Rose Street which is now the Heritage Centre. My G Grandfather and Emily resided at 4 Rose Street after they were married which is now the Aquatics shop. Tragically Emily died in childbirth in 1905 and my great grandfather returned to his naitve Yorkshire, remarried and remained in Hull, East Yorks until he died in 1959. Anyone who has any info on the Kicks family or has any old photos of the premises down Rose Street I would be grateful to hear from you.

I married a Sheerness man,Barry Holmes in 1957 in New Zealand.I was from Devon.In 1961 I visited Sheerness and what a lovely little
town it was,charming with a lovely atmosphere.Lovely shops and cafes, I bought a hat for my sister-in-laws wedding.
My mother-in-law was a lady I took to right away and we remained close until her death.Sadly Barry's father died 6 weeks before our arrival .I think fondly of Sheerness often having visited from NZ many times over 54 years.
Barry made some brassware for the Dockyard Church but I don't know what happened to it.It would be nice to Know for our family history.What a fascinating history Sheerness itself has!

I have just come across this site and think the photos are fantastic. They bring back many memories as I lived on the Island in Westminster until I left in 1974. I went to Bluetown Primary School and then Sheerness Secondary School for Girls. I saw the photos of the flood in 1953 which I vividly remember.

Hi Jackie2 I went to the National School in Sheerness also known as Trinity School in and left in 1966. I lived in Alexandra Road and on many occasions had to carry Mrs Evans bag home as she lived a few doors from my house. I remember her little dog and remember being rewarded for carrying her bag with a sweet from her tin at her house. My memories are of singing in the hall scarlet Ribbons and Puff the Magic Dragon comes to mind when I think of her. I am also looking for photos of the school but unsuccessful so far. Does anyone have any pictures of the school. I would also love to hear from anyone with any pictures of the Co op dairy where my uncle was manager and the little row of cottages called Chapel Row which I believe was in the same area. My nan lived there. I remember going to visit but can't recall exactly where it was.

Just stumbled across your website. I was stationed at Sheerness dockyards 1953 thru 1954 as Cpl in a REME detachment to the 24th HAA Reg. Two wonderfull years. Vaguely remember the George Hotel - lots of fun, and a lovely young woman Pat who lived on Alma St. I am now happily married in the US but have very fond memories of your lovely island.

Page 5 - Flood Water? I'm not a resident of Sheerness, nor Sheppey, but know the place from having worked there and think this photograph was taken in West Street, Blue Town, with the photographer standing approximately where West Street now meets Brielle Way (which [i.e. Briell Way] didn't exist when the photograph was taken. Remebber all the Duffs that have been mentioned, Brenda was my best friend at The girls Central School and was very gifted with her beautiful singing voice and her knowldedge of music and was so much fun to be with. It seems we shared a grandmother I too remember 1 Unity Street and spent many happy times visiting "Nanny Matthews" with my mother Marjorie. Nan loved a game of bingo at the arcade on the front and we used to take her there whenever we visited her. Sadly the family was fragmented although we did have contact with Kitty & Peg. Nan often used to play the piano in the Blacksmiths Arms

Beautiful is all i can say, brings back sooo many memories, am a Nigerian my name Toni, lived in Sheerness, with my sister and dickson another nigerian with my nanny, then Mrs Duchesne, its funny now when i realise we were very few blacks then, could count on one finger how many we were, but i hardly ever felt or observed any racial backlash, people of sheerness were soo warm, now back in nigeria last time i visited sheerness was in 1999 and sooo much had changed cos we left in 1985.
Went to rose street Primary school and st Georges middle school till we left in 1985.would be sooo nice to get in touch with my classmates then both from Rose street and St georges.

I was born in Sittingbourne and went to the Sheerness Technical School from 1942 to febuary 1945 when I took the exam and joined the R.A.F. Apprentice School at R.A.F.Halton. I remember we had to go to the school next to us to use their gym and also in the summer we would use the old swimming baths as there was no roof on it. Like you I am very interested to find out more about the Sheerness Hippodrome - especially what went on in your mother's era, because my Great Grandfather FRED LEIGHTON was Manager & Licence Holder of the Hippodrome at that time. I am trying to find out more about him and wondered if there is any mention in your autograph books of what went on at the Hippodrome in the early 1900's ? In answer to your enquiry, the old Hippodrome has now become the HSBC Bank!
Fred Leighton's brother-in-law, Albert Ernest COLMER, lived at 21 Delamark Road - which was then called Seaview Terrace - which took a lot of tracking down as there was no mention of a it on any map of Sheerness back to 1894. Eventually when checking the 1901 Census, with the Sheerness Library`s help, I noticed that Delamark Road was only recorded with even numbers and on the next Census page there were the corresponding odd numbers, but the name of the road had changed to Seaview Terrace! While driving around Sheerness I have also noticed that some roads have two names... there is also the original plaque, stating the former name of the road. Further enquiries to the Society of Kent Studies have revealed that many named were changed after WW1 to `jazz things up a bit` which led to changes of name like `The Broadway` etc.
Getting back to Albert Ernest Colmer, who was always known as Ernest... he married Lottie Brown who was a concert pianist - The Brown Family lived at 21 (now)Delamark Road and I believe I have found images of Lottie and Fred Leighton & others in a photograph entitled, "The Original Georgian Concert Party" which was at the Bandstand in Sheerness.
If anyone has any information or images in connection with the early 1900's at Sheerness, especially the Sheerness Hippodrome, please get in contact and I would especially like to hear from Jean Redford.

I was born 1937 in Sheerness. I lived in Delamark Road. I would be i terested to know What happend to the Hippodrome?. As my mother collected all the stars altographs of that period. I have three scrap books with signatures of Wee Georgie Wood and Hilda Baker , Monty Marks and many others which I do not know of to-day. Dating from 18th April 1949 to May 1950. As a Child I use to play with my friends in this building when it was derelict. I cannot remember whether it was bombed or just left to die!
Any one with any information I would be grateful. I was Jean Redford at that time.

My grandmother lived at 1 Unity Street, name: Edith Emily Matthews,born 1884, known as Gladys and she was a school teacher who married John Thomas Matthews, born 1876. My father, John Frederick Matthews, born 1916 and who died in 1996, worked in the Glass Factory when single. There were seven children in all, five girls and two boys. As a child the annual coach trip from London to Sheerness was always exciting; I remember having to walk through the long alleyway opposite nan's house to reach the sea front and up the steps to the beach. The old Ambulance Station was next door - does anyone remember this?

Fantastic to see old views as well as more recent ones of Sheerness as I've been doing my family history and my maternal DAVIS family come from here. My gtgtgt grandfather was James Davis (bc 1793) whose 2nd wife was Ann White. We are descended from their son William Henry Davis (b 1828) who married Eliza TOWNSEND. William & James were both shipwrights. I believe (but haven't proved) that James' 1st wife was Frances Lee and one of their children was James Joshua Davis. Eliza Townsend's sister Maria married John GREEN and the Green family at various times ran The Crown and The Britannia.
If anybody has any connection or info on these families, I would be happy for you to pass on my e-mail address.

For James Ashby, my great-grandfather was a fireman at Sheerness fire station. He was born in 1860 and died in 1888, aged just 28. His death was reported in the Sheerness Times and he was borne to Halfway cemetery on the fire engine. 38 years later, his granddaughter (my aunt) was buried in the same grave, having died of polio in 1936.

Hi Trevor, An interesting site of a place I know nothing of! Except! a great grandfather who married a local woman , and had his first child in Sheppy Sheerness about 1884. He was a sapper in the army. Was there any kind of military station nearby?

I would be very interested in finding out more on the owner of Canning Town Glass, probably in the first half of the last century 1900-1950. All I know is that he was a Colonel Braley, that he owned a large red car, possibly a Rolls Royce, a large yacht and probably lived in London. The previous Mayor Bill Flanagan gave me the information above, today, but he didn't give me the Colonel's first name. I'm following up an old family story and would like to find some facts to the fiction!

Most of your photographs are displayed on the bar and surrounding ledges in the pub, under tight sealed glass for all to view. When I lived on the island from 1939 until 1956, it was a vibrant town,as young teenagers we had a great time. Queenborough tanner hop, on wednesday evenings, The Wheatsheaf, and Conservative clubs also had dances, and tge "Big Bands" used to come on the island. Ken Macintosh, Joe Loss with Cleo Laine George Melly to name a few. Coach trips were also organised to follow these bands to seaside venues, Margate Ramsgate etc.Anyone remember these times. We were very lucky, and not short of partners, as we had an Army Barracks in town, and also the Navy lads. The fairground and surrounding areas were we used to hand out, when not parading up and down the High Street. Our first coffee bar was owned by Soaves, and they were very foriegn to us, coming all the way from Italy!!!! There was another one next to a jewellers by the Town Clock. When living on the island I lived in Park Road, and worked for Matthews, after attending Sheerness Secondary, in Jefferson Road.
Anyone remember Queenborough Youth Club, and busses running late in the evening?
I do still visit Sheppey, to see friends that I was at school with, but sadly though, it looks neglected and most buildings look in dire need of a paintjob!!
I thoroughly enjoyed looking through this site, and I do have photos of football clubs (Sheppey Tech) and (Dockyard Apprentices) circa 1955.

A really excellent website; perhaps anyone knows of any descendants of my great-grandfather Davis who was born in 1860 and died in 1888, aged just 28. He was employed as a fireman although a carpenter by profession. His father was born in 1816 and his grandfather in 1796. I shall be pleased to hear from anyone who can offer any information, and in return I can give information one member of the family that will knock their socks off!

What a great site, stumbled across it looking for info on Sheerness. Apparently my 2x gt grandfather was born in Bluetown c1801. He lived in Chapel Street. He joined the RN and married in Devon. The family mostly lived in Cornwall. I know nothing about Sheerness or Kent although I was born in Lancashire I have lived most of my life in Australia.

Hi, I stumbled across your site while searching for information about my family. My ancestors lived in Sheerness, and my grandfather's second wife still lives there. My grandfather, Alexander Short, was a pathologist and a warrant officer in the navy during the war, he died in 1983. He moved up to Liverpool and married my grandmother around the time of the war, but later they divorced and he moved back to Sheerness. I managed to find some information about his parents, William Short and Louisa Roberts, but after that things got a bit more difficult. The Roberts line is a bit easier to trace, but the Short line just stops dead. Short seems to be a name with a certain amount of history on Sheppey, I read some information on the Short Brothers aeroplane factory, but actual genealogical data is a bit scarce. This is a shot in the dark, just wondering if there's anyone reading this (and looking at the great photos) who'd recognise any of the above.

Left the island in 1984, but all the family still live there & i visit whenever i can. Rio holds memories, my mum worked there in the 70's when it became a factory for Thorns Valves. The Argosy later turned into Ladbrookes bingo, & i worked there for a while along with my sister Lynne, who still lives in Sheerness.

Hi Toronto Canada here...still looking for anyone who went to Broadway girls school 1956-57 I was born in Sheerness 1946...left when very young and went back and spent several more childhood years there. I loved it and have never forgotten my time there. Loved the seafront, and the pool, and Mr. Beans sweet shop on Merrick Rd. Used to love to go to the Argosy. anyone remember those things? Merry Christmas all and Happy New Year!!

Your relative Cllr Hamon opened the Rio cinema in the Broadway on Monday 21 June 1937 shortly after the Riz in Wood St was opened in March 1937 by Cllr Coats who was then the Chairman of Sheerness Urban District Council. I guess your reltive succeeded him as Chairman. Sheerness did not have a mayor. The Rio was a large cinema seating 1600 people. Thanks for your reply regarding cinemas in Sheerness, further research has led me to discover that it was the Rio cinema (not the first cinema after all) and was opened on 21st June 1937, do you have any pictures?

There was originally a cinema opened in 1911 as The Electric, then Tower's Hall (after the owner) and finally the Cambridge Latterly Ex Servicemen's Club. It has since been knocked down, like many buildings in Sheerness.The only mayor at the time was the mayor of Queenborough.The Royal Picturedrome was built in Queenborough in 1912 renamed the Queens in 1920 and the Ace in 1945 and closed 1954. A house is now on the site. A book is available in Sheerness Heritage Centre Rose St showing the history of all the cinemas in Swale.

Thanks for putting together a wonderful archive of images of Sheerness and Sheppey. My father's family (Frier) lived in Sheerness from the mid-19th century, with strong dockyard connections. I lived on the Queenborough road from 1945 to 1961, and the pictures brought back many memories.

Hi Trevor,

I used to be a regular visitor of Sheerness when I was younger.
At that time the Olau Line was still in service and I often booked a minicruise with them.
I found this site while I was working nightshifts. It's not that busy at night, you see.
I remember the times when I visited Sheerness and these pictures take me back to times gone by. I hope, in future times, I will be able to vist the town again.

the co-op club down st georges avenue in sheerness has other aerial pictures of the dockyard. these show the ravelin battery where tesco now stands. it would be good if you could get copies to put on here.

Thanks for these pics. They bring back memories of my childhood. I was born at home in Halfway Road Sheerness in 1951 and at the age of 10, emmigrated to Australia with my parents, brother and sister. (David & Dorothy). I love the "snow" pic with the clock at the centre. I have not seen snow since leaving England. I went to school at Alexandria Infants and then the Holy Trinity School (beside the Church). It is a shame that the School is no longer there, just an empty vacant lot. (Well it was in 1994). I will always consider Sheerness home. I now live in Nth Qld were the climate is tropical. Happy New Year everyone. Thanks Stewart for putting me onto this site.

Hi, I am Brenda Jean Duff. I was born and raised in Sheppey. 111 Halfway rd. Sheerness. I left in 1959 to join the WRAF. I went to Minster school and I believe it is a house now. Tks for the pics. I rmember new years eve at midnight when drunks would climb the clock to turn the time back. And the fairgrounds? I worked in W.H.Barons music shop on Broadway new high st. I really enjoy looking at these pictures,Iwas born on the Island and lived in Sheerness East for 16 years untill I joined Army Boy Service in 1955,my parents then emigrated to Australia in 1961.When I was in sheerness there used to be three cinemas.the Argosy the Ritz and the Rio it was a lively old town.The first job I got when I left school was in the dockyard as a yardboy in the carpenters and joiners shop I was 15.Sometimes I pay a viit to the Island and my favourite place is Harty I like the remoteness of the place and I really love the little old small church there it is unique.

Hi there again,
Harry SUMMERTON from Mississauga,Ontario, CANADA. Was surprised to learn that the old Police Station in Bluetown, (Any idea how Bluetown got it's name), was one of the,if not the oldest in England!! During my stint as a Constable in Sheerness, we used to have a police office in the High Street, almost opposite the Goat Inn. Was astonished to see how The Broadway has changed!! Looks so much narrower than in my day, when traffic was two way,as was traffic in the High Street. The pictures of the Maidstone and District double decker busses sure brought memories flooding back. I was courting my first wife during my first few months in Sheerness. Used to take the E6 Express bus to Victoria coach station often, taking the very last one back to Sheerness, that got there after 2am!! And, after a couple of hours sleep, was able to be ready for early turn; 6am to 2pm!!
Such names on the island as Cowstead Corner; Halfway; Westminster; Queenborough;Ship on Shore. A taxi company owned by someone named COLLINS, used to stand outside the railway station.All their vehicles were Hawker Siddeleys. Two local Doctors were named MADWAR, (Father and Son),and there were three others. The Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages was named Reg FILEY. When I had to attend courses at Police HQ, Maidstone, took the M and D bus; the 40 went via Key Street, while the 41 went via Detling. Along the wall of one shop in the High Street, was the following; "May your life be like a semibreve and not cut off stacatto. Look sharp and be sharp". Wonder if it is still there? Near the Clock Tower was a Montague BURTONS; Thomas the Chemist, and Stocks, the newsagents. Lil STOCK was a super lady, very hard working, and there was always a hot cup of tea waiting for the Constable on duty. What a trip down memory lane!! Many thanks,

Good morning to you from Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA!! A fascinating website is this. Even moreso for me!! From 1949 until 1953, I was stationed at Sheerness as a Police Constable in the Kent County Constabulary!! The old Police Station was indeed, in Bluetown, and many is the time, usually at 6.30am, again at noon, then at 1pm, and finally at 5pm during the week, did traffic duty at the Clock Tower,when all the dockyard workers would go to and from work!! I was there in the terrible East Coast flooding, when much of Sheerness, especially lower parts were flooded for some time. This, what was a, fine example of architectural, social and local history is just one illustration of the demolition and erosion of the foundations of Sheerness together with one of Kent and England's earliest Police Stations at Bluetown; the magnificent facade of the Wheatsheaf Building and many more instances that were destroyed or allowed to decay. Buildings and places that would have be fiercely maintained and protected in many towns proud of their heritage. Such apparently 'head in the sand' planning leads to rumours of brown envelopes an backhanders in disbelief of such ignorance being present or if it been, was repeated.

Re the queries about cinemas.These are the ones in Sheerness.In 1911 the first cinema The Electric opened in Sheerness near the Crown Hotel in the High Street. It was later called Tower’s Hall after the then owner. The Arcadia in Sheerness was built over the Wellington public house and patrons reached the ticket office via a steep flight of wooden stairs. It was renamed the Casino in 1921 but soon after closed. The other cinema in Sheerness was the Oxford, which seated 600 and finally closed its doors in 1937. The building still exists in Russell St as the Oxford Shopping Arcade. The golden years of cinema in the 1930s saw three super-cinemas built, the Argosy, Rio and Ritz - all in Sheerness. The Ritz was opened 0n 15th March 1937 and seated 1300 patronsThe Argosy was built in 1936 and the Rio was built in 1938. It was the biggest of the three having a seating capacity of 1600 and was the most luxurious having a large tea dance room on the 1st floor. The Rio was closed in 1958 and had a short life as a factory before being demolished and a block of flats erected next to the Royal Hotel. The Argosy was converted into a Bingo Hall in 1975 and the seats, which were the originals, were donated to Sheppey Little Theatre, which opened in 1975 There was also a cinema in Queenborough finally known as the Ace. We have a booklet in Sheerness heritage centre tracing the history of all the cinemas in Swale

Trevor, I used to work at canningtown glass works before it was taken over. I have such happy childhood in sheerness before I left in 1982. I have been back there two years ago and was shocked to find the changes there. I have looked at rhe photos and was shocked to see you and your dad and all my former workmates still around. thanks so much for the happy memories. Terry

Excellent site and a wonderful archive of pictures. Those like me who spent a wonderful and safe childhood growing up in the town in the 1950's, when it was a lovely seaside community, should be forever grateful to you. I especially like the rare photos of the Bluetown community of which my mother was part at the beginning of the 1900's. She was one of the apparently numerous "Young" and "Vile" families.
Regarding cinemas, the book, "Memories of Kent Cinemas" refers also to the "Oxford" cinema, the building of which, can still be seen in Russell Street and the "Electric Theatre", which became Nokes' workshop and the ex-servicemens' club, next to the "Crown" pub in the High Street. Evidently the Hippodrome theatre also functioned as a cinema occasionally in its early days. There was also a purpose-built cinema in Queenborough named the "Queens" and subsequently the "Royal" Some halls up the Island functioned as temporary summer season "cinemas"

Hi Ben, Yes there were several cinemas in Sheerness, I'm not sure how many exactly.
I know of the Rio, Ritz and the Argosy.
