June 6th

Edgewater Lake, Sugar Land Texas

Invasion of the Black Crowned Night Herons
My town has many lakes and many, many large Live Oak trees (we are known for our trees). This makes a perfect stopping spot for migrating birds,
and for nesting waterfowl especially. In late May, we get inundated with Night Herons.
The City has to put out Warning - Slow Down signs every April - June, because there are young birds EVERYWHERE, especially in the streets.
In one block, yesterday, I came across about 30 juvenile Night Herons on the street or in the trees.
Unfortunately, some of these babies fall on the pavement and end up hurt.

Amazing to hear of how common this species is in your area, where here they are uncommon and infrequently seen! Lovely shot to accompany your interesting text. V
