Sigma 50-500mm is a very good lens. However, at the longest reach, my feeling is that it cannot outresolve the pixel pitch of the sensor on the 350D. Since the 5D has a coarser pixel pitch, and better high-ISO behavior, the flexibility of the 50-500 may be a good match.
400mm f/5.6L is definitely a higher quality lens. It is significantly lighter than the Bigma and focuses much faster. This is a great lens for taking pictures of birds in flight. Obviously, it has no zoom capability and its maximum reach is less than the Sigma 50-500, but you can get decent results with a 1.4x teleconverter.

A beautiful capture, macshark! I see you use the Sigma 50-500mm & the Canon 400mmf 5.6 lenses & wondered which you preferred? I'm looking to buy a "long" lens for Canon 5D & wondered which you would recommend?
