30-OCT-2010

I had intended going to Gyles Quay which is a couple of miles from my home,
to catch the sunset. I spend too long in town, doing the grocery shopping and
making sure I had all the ingredients for the Christmas cake which my son
will be making at school next week. Yes, boys do Home Economics and I'm
delighted as hopefully it will mean he will be able to cook for himself whenever
he leaves home.
But I digress. Realising that the sun was sinking fast, I just had time to get home,
put the shopping on the table and tell my long suffering husband to stick the
chicken in the oven, hop back in the car and drive up our road to the seafront.
As I took some pics of the boats, I spied this fisherman in the water and thought
'bingo'- that's my PAD. Then I noticed another photographer with his tripod
a short distance away. He was still there when I returned home to see how
dinner was progressing. It made me wonder though - how different - or better-
would my pic be if I used a tripod, as I have to confess my tripod spends its days
at home.

Beautifully done, Maire, you have captured the beautiful light and the mood of day's end. BV

Just lovely Mai...I don't think you need a tripod judging by the result. V

I leave my monopod and my tripod in my truck unless absolutely necessary. It takes away the spontaneous moment of seeing the shot and capturing it. It makes it a bit to mechanical, and less artistic for me. You have a steady hand and your photo is wonderful! V

At 1/250th I don't think it would make a huge difference with a "soft detail" (almost Turner-like)image like this one. However with the sun setting he may have been doing long exposure shots, possibly even some HDR work, for which it would be a necessity. It's nice to have a tripod, but sometimes the effort of lugging it around isn't worth it.

Lovely image - super 'end of the day' feel to it. Feeling very smug I made our Christmas cake 4 weeks ago - its due another sherry soaking!

Its a classic shot Mairead - as mentioned already, the tripod would be pointless here (unless you've got an extremely shaky hand!) since the person in the water would become a moving ghost image. f11 gives good DOF and the shutter's fast enough to avoid blur. V

beautifully composed and very interesting with the man in the water and the boat. The light is marvelous. Glad you got here in time.

No tripod needed here, it's a fantastic shot with wonderful sky colours and the fisherman is a great bonus. v

I lose more shots while fiddling with a tripod than I ever lose to motion blur. Hard to imagine how this image could be improved!

I think you did a great job without a tripod...it's lovely!! Have you thought of using a gorilla pod?

Wonderful image! Don't see why you would need the tripod with your settings and steady hand. Well done. ~V

Excellent! V.

It's a beautiful image, Mairead. I confess that I detest using my tripod because I find it too constricting. I use it only when absolutely necessary. ~V~

If you can be still, no need for the tripod.
Beautiful lighting and silhouettes. V.

...and another thing, the other photographer is out in the cold and your home making dinner, enough said.
Kevin Chester30-Oct-2010 21:44
Well its a great shot, and I have to confess I leave mine at home all too often. At 250th and 92mm you should be OK in my opinion, and your ISO is sill respectable 400 so no issues with noise. PS As long as your son still makes the wooden board to rest the Christmas cake on then mankind will live to see another day ;-)

I'm glad he meant to be in the water - it caught my eye, first thinking he fell in! V

I thought that's what I saw in the thumb... just had to look to see if it was! Great find and fantastic setting!
Can't see how a tripod would have helped much, you can't slow things down too far or the blokey would blur!

very nice!!
