The Last Thatch

When people think of Ireland they tend to think of thatched cottages but if truth be told, they are few and far between these days, especially along the east coast.
This is the last thatched cottage in the town of Drogheda.
It hasn't been lived in for several years and although there's a preservation order on it, the roof is beginning to fall through.
A local lady who was passing told me how the birds peck at the roof to eat insects living there and, I'd image, they probably help themselves to the straw come nesting time.
And yes, that's a blue sky you see!

once economical and practical roofing material, thatch does require some maintenance...this scene reminds of a place I visited numerous times as a boy...my gran and one aunt lived in the Knocknadona area, northwest of Lisburn...further up the Glenavy Road was a wondrous roadside shop in a similar building...my aunt would fill her bag with various supplies, tea, bread, butter, jam, eggs, rashers etc. but as a young lad I only had eyes for the sweets, particularly Dolly Mixtures and Raspberry Ruffles..

Nicely captured. Hadn't thought about it but a thatched roof would be a wonderful resource for a bird!

I love the primary palette here! It's a shame people let things fall into disrepair.

A beautiful red door in the bright sun!

It's always a shame to see a cottage left to rot. My neighbour has a fine wire mesh over the thatch on her cottage roof and the birds still get a meal and some nesting material!

I hope they can preserve this remarkable bit of old-style Ireland. Love the bright red door and deep blue sky!
