Remembering the Tain

The legend of the Tain Bo Chulaigne or the Cattle Raid of Cooley is one of the great Euopean epics.
It tells the story of Queen Maeve who lead her armies from Connaught to capture the famed Brown Bull of Cooley and Cuchullain, the warrior who defended Ulster.

I must confess, I find that the expressions "cattle raid" and "epic" make strange bedfellows, with or without John Wayne.
But I do like this portrait, though; they're both looking vary comfortable and relaxed, and strangely at home in their costumes. Indeed almost to the extent that they don't seem like costumes at all. If they aren't professional actors they may have another career to fall back on.

there's hearty spirit for you...luckily Maeve failed to capture the brown bull, or, more importantly, the Cooley Distillery...Morgan Llywelyn recounted a compelling version of the old tale in her book 'Red Branch'...three toasts to Cuchullain..
