Ulysses 100

This year marks the centenary of the publication of Jame Joyce's most famous book.
I can't pretend to have read Ulysses although a good friend gave me a copy as a wedding present over 30 years ago.
I naively thought I'd read it while on maternity leave and even though we have an empty nest once more, it still sits in the book case.

I would have done better if I could have had the concentration to understand it properly. And my Audible version was a very thick Irish accent which I definitely do not understand that well. I would rather spend my limited time reading something a little less obscure that I enjoy. Anyway, your photo is well composed and presented!

Give it a go, it's definitely a hard read (it took me over four months) but stick with it. BTW, don't ever try to read Finnegan's Wake, now there's a tome which defines unreadable :o)

I haven’t read it either. Your creative and superbly composed image definitely makes it intriguing. V

A perfect image to illustrate the verb "to read"".

As for my copy of Ulysses, it is still on the shelf, not read.

Outstanding image. I really like your composition; plus, the glasses magnifying some of the words.

Although my father and older sister have both read and would even discuss James Joyce's "Ulysses", I have never read it. And I was the English major!!! They both read the 1961 edition. My father was a white-collar supervisor, and my sister a CPA. However, if it means anything at all, I have read and studied Homer's Odyssey; from which James Joyce supposedly modeled "Ulysses". Maybe you can put reading your copy of "Ulysses" on your after retirement (someday in the future) "to-do" list.

I can't pretend to have read it either, since I've heard that it borders on the unreadable, but... I have one word for you that will allow you to "bucket list" the thing without cheating TOO much. That word is Audible. You can "read" it while multitasking; driving to work, cooking dinner, giving Fudge treats of freshly cooked steak (sorry Fudge, I tried...) anything really. Even then, though, depending on the (unabridged) version that you select the read time ranges from a bit over 27 hours to a bit over 42 hours. The longest audiobook in my library at the moment is "A Man On The Moon" (the Apollo program) by Andrew Chaikin at 23 hours, followed by the Italian version of Bill Bryson's Breve storia di (quasi) tutto at 21 hours 40 (the inglese version is shorter) so yes, it's a pretty huge listen and will still take you several days of listening to get to the end. It's still easier than reading it on dead papyrus, though.

Read or not, it still makes for a great picture. V.

Nicely set up shot. I don't know of anyone who has actually ready Ulysses, though I do know a few who have started it.

Ulysses is an arduous read, if a rewarding one assuming you make it to the end...admire your image as an inspired salute to the joy of reading..
