Unfortunately, on looking closer, it seems he has an injury to one of his eyes

I hope s/he was just squinting. However the reality of life in the wild is that... it's hard, even in a relatively benign and temperate environment. I'm not sure whether Bella the Budgie (seen somewhere in my current PESO) ever pines for the wild, but I suspect not given that "In captivity, budgies can live anywhere between 7-15 years of age. This is almost twice the life expectancy of a wild budgie." I'm sure the actuarial stats aren't much better for blue tits.
