Imam Khomeini International Airport

Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) (In Persian: فرودگاه بین‌المللی امام خمینی) is located in Tehran, Iran. The airport is located about 30 kilometers south of the city. It was designed to replace Mehrabad International Airport, which is in the west of the city, now inside the city boundaries.

History:
The construction began before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The original design was based on Dallas Airport. The original designers were TAMS, a consortium of US designers. A local joint venture was formed and was called TAMS-AFA to carry out the full design and supervision of construction.
After the Islamic Revolution the project was abandoned until the government of Iran decided to design and build the airport using local know-how. The French ADP was selected to head the local designers and engineering firms...

By now we all have heard of the tragic news of one of their passenger plane crashing with many people aboard. From what I read they are blaming the United States from not being able to purchase plane parts due to the restrictions the U.S. has put on them. Maybe if we wait long enough all their planes wont fly anymore & they will stop their terrorists ways & surrender!

TONY, Your best bet is to check the Iran Air, Mahan or Aseman websites. I believe most doestic flights are operated out of THR (Mehrabad) airport.

So basically, this forum contains no useful information relevant to people who are travelling to this airport. All this page has to offer, is comments from an unemployed geezer trying to get a job at this airport who thinks this is the IKA recruitment site, political dissidents upset about the name and artistic quality of the airport, a far right ultra nationalist person arguing about the name of "The Gulf" or "Persian Gulf", and a bunch of confused tourists who are worried about public flogging at the airport.... Its really PATHETIC, shame on the Iranian Government! International Airports are places where First and Last impression of that nation is made. Iran, with its glorious history and a country of 70million, has just this to show for? FACT, this airport project was tremendously cut in its scope and budget. Well, after so many years of waiting, this so called airport was opened for the sake of the arguement. What a disaster. There rest rooms are, no where to be found in the departure area. Travel advisory. Please, avoid drinking plenty of liqiud , prior to your departure. Good luck , people

The road to/from airport doesn't have sufficient signage. For safety, at a minimum large freeway signs needs to be installed as well as caution flashing lights. If one misses an exit, there should be freeway overpasses and access back into the freeway and on the opposite direction same. There should be highway patrol/freeway police stations enroute as well as tourist/welcome stations so people who get lost or have questions have someone to turn to, because otherwise the road's very desolate and very few people to ask how to get anywhere. Please focus on at least the safety issue..Where the airport exit is off the Qom/Saveh freeway, there are apparently two freeway exits very near each other, and we took the first one, but needed the second one, then we saw no more signs on how to get back onto the freeway and there were no people around..we didn't know what to do. There should have been large signs on how to get back to the road and go toward the airport. Our driver even thought of taking the same offramp against speeding oncoming traffic (but didn't)..not good...Please install large signs, caution flashing lights, guard/road police/tourist offices along this road. For those that may use the wrong turn or exit, please place large signs and a way to get back to the main road..Thanks..

I remember 50 years ego the Mehrabad Airport was very far from Tehran but today is in Centre of Tehran. I think the new Airport will grove and hope of more safety connection between the airport and Teheran centre. Can anyone tell me if there are some hotels in this area?

The only problem with Imam Khomeini Airport is that it is very very far from Tehran, and it is a long trip to get there. Also, currently it only serves flights to and from the Gulf.
