CAMERA EQUIPMENT I USE AND/OR RECOMMEND

I am often asked what photo equipment I use and/or recommend. Below is a list of cameras, lenses and gadgets I either own, owned or tested and have no problem to recommend. *** means that these items I own recently and use often or carry with me on field trips.

CLICK ON PRODUCT NAME TO FIND MORE INFORMATION. 99% of my photo gear purchases are done on Amazon. Why? Low price (often the lowest), vast delivery (usually free), great warranty and return policy (I had problems with returns in the past when I used other well known Internet retailers)

CAMERAS

  • ***Canon EOS 7D 18 MP Camera – great camera, works like a champ and has acceptable price tag

  • Canon EOS 1D Mark IV 16.1 MP top of the line professional gun, buy it today if you can afford (not only a price tag but also the value loss after a year or two)

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II 21.1MP Full Frame CMOS Great for landscape photographer or somebody photographing only medium and large animals in close range, bit too slow for action shots

    TELEPHOTO LENSES

  • ***Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Lens – my best working horse, OK to hike with all day long and handhold

  • Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM Lens
  • Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM Lens – also great lens but could be too heavy for all day hiking

  • Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM Lens new improved model

  • Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens – impressive lens but not cheap; if money are no matter – buy it – you won’t be disappointed

  • ***Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens – light, sharp, very easy to carry around – great to have it as a backup

  • ***Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens – a bit soft and not super fast with autofocus but very useful sometimes

  • Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens
  • Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens

    MACRO & WIDE LENSES

  • ***Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens very good lens for macro and not only

  • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM 1-to-1 Macro Lens – great lens for macro freaks

  • Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens – another great lens for macro freaks

  • ***Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens – a must for some landscape shots, etc

  • Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens - better than 17-40mm but twice as expensive

    TELEPHOTO EXTENDERS

  • ***Canon EF 1.4X II Extender – have two, one stay glued to my 500mm

  • Canon EF 1.4X III Telephoto Extenter new improved model

  • ***Canon EF 2X II Extender – little too soft but never know when you might need one

  • Canon EF 2.0X III Telephoto Extenter new improved model

    FLASHES

  • ***Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash – great flash but I only use this one for an emergency (not a flash photography lover)

  • ***Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash I just love it – essential for macro work

  • Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite another good choice for macro work
