Lens reviews and tests

In this gallery you will find my lens tests done mostly using Nikon D70, D2X, D200, D300, D7000 and D7100. If not stated differently, all pics shot at ISO200 & ISO100, RAW, daylight, no sharpening other than the one incorporated into RAW converter. Mayority of tests performed using single lens sample, so the results might not be a good representative of that particular lens. When results deviate significantly from expected, lens is retested and if satisfactory results are still not achieved, another sample is obtained for testing.

Hi Akhan, yes it's a bit strange lineup/marketing decision of producing two similar range & quality lenses but with very different pricing. Anyway, if you manage to get a good copy, Sigma 17-70 is one heluva lens to have at very modest price. Talking of focal length, yes, it's a huge difference in viewing angle between 24-85 and 17-70. You probably wan't miss that upper 15 mm, but 17 vs 24 mm is one HUGE difference. Of course, general tip is valid as always: if you can, try before you buy! And, yes, rely on dependable dealer with good return policy.

Miljenko, I've really enjoyed your lens reviews, especially those that compare the Sigma 18-50 EX and Sigma 17-70. I am still a little confused as to the marketing of these lenses... I currently own a Canon EF 24-85 (on a EOS 10D body), and am thinking of getting a Sigma 17-70. Would that be a significant improvement in the Wide-Angle aspect of the lens? If I understand correctly, my current lens is 24x1.6-85x1.6 (approx.) 35-135? So would the Sigma be 17-70 or 17x1.6-70x1.6 (approx.) 28-105 on my digital body? Thank you so much! Hi Paul, I hope you did receive your d200 copy and started shooting with your new lenses. Although 18-200 is a nice allrouder lens, it's not a miracle soluton for all situations. It could be a nice addition to a serious lens line-up, but not the substitution for good primes or zooms.

Thanks Miljenko for your very detailed reviews. Had been considering new kit and with your help went out yesterday and purchased Nikon D200, Sigma 17-70 and 50-500, First impressions, impressive. Bigma seems ideal lens for airshows and birds (amongst other things).
At moment D200 in short supply in UK and waiting list for 18-200 Nikon lens ridiculous. Nikon UK say they expect to start having stock in few weeks but I know several individual shops have back orders for 30+ each so they are talking about 5-6 months before any become available for new orders.

Nikkor 85mm f1.8 is in production for so long and it is notoriously known for great results so I felt there is no much (new) to say about it. Besides, I have mine always in the bag, using it a lot, expecialy for portraits. Milkjenko, I've really enjoyed your lens tests and have found them very helpful in making decisions about what to purchase. I've decided to get the Sigma 30mm/1.4 to go along with my 18-200 VR, and have now started to think about a longer prime. I noticed that you have a Nikon 85mm 1.8d in your bokeh tests of the boy and field of flowers, but that you haven't tested it more extensively. If you have any interest in doing it, I and probably many others would be very appreciative. Thanks for your efforts!

Saluti, Mario, I had 18-70 for a while (really good copy), then switched to Sigma 18-50 and finaly I settled for 17-70. 18-70 was not fast enough, while 18-50 had yellow cast and I was missing that extra 20 mm. Now I'm fully satisfied with 17-70; it focuses precisely (but not extremely fast) on both D70 and D200, gives neutral, saturated and sharp pics all the way from f2.8. My recommendation for your first lens!

i reviewed carefully your tests involving Sigma 17-70 and Nikkor 18-70, but still looking forward to you comparing directly these two lenses. I decided to make my first step into digital getting a D70 body (probably used) and, to begin, a 18-70 or 17-70. Are there focusing issues when Sigma is used on a D70 or D70s? And now, the main question... :-) regardless of price, which of the two lenses would you buy for yourself? Thanks a lot for your advice, and congratulations again for the great job on this site.
