The Pine Barrens

The NJ Pine Barrens deserves its own section. It is one of the most unique and interesting ecosystems in all of NJ. Acidic bogs, carnivorous plants, over 20 species of native orchids and many other unusual plants really command one's attention. That this is all to be found in the most densely populated state in the nation is truly incredible. Though altered over the years, the Pine Barrens looks essentially untouched, over a million acres of mostly Pine/oak forest. Everything seems to belong there, and compared to the rest of the state, there are less non-native plants since the soil requirements are not met by the acidic sand/peat of the Pines. I've updated this section to include insects, mammals, reptiles and amphibians of the Pine Barrens as well as historical sites.
