My Days in the 551st SMS..Lincoln AFB, Nebraska 1964-65

These photos were taken in the Winter of 1964 and the Spring of 1965. The Winter of 1964-65 was especially bitter with snow and ice, as the squadron was restricted off the state roads for several days. The missiles were removed in 1965 and were phased out of the AF inventory. These were taken with a Brownie 620 roll-fim camera and the color ones were taken with a new Kodak Instamatic. This gallery is created as a history item for those who served in the Atlas F ICBM weapons system and those at Lincoln AFB. Some comments will be soon added to each photo. Gallery is to show some of the work that these missile systems required and the equipment used in Servicing Section. Hi Steve, I don't know if you are still watching this site for comments but just saw you question here so thought I would respond. My name is Stephen Fisk I served in the 551 SMS from Jan 1962 until the unit was deactivated in June 1965. I was an Electrical Power Production Technician (EPPT) assigned to Combat Crew S-23 in Sector B (Sites 4,5 & 6). I remember your Dad because on several occasions I traded alert tours with his EPPT and so I worked on your Dad's crew several times. He was as I recall a kind and considerate man and paid very close attention to every detail of his responsibilities as the Commander of a Missile Combat Crew. I can't say I knew him well because I only occasionally worked with him but these 5 man crews were very close knit groups and I know he was highly respected by his own crew members. It was indeed a sad thing when we learned that they had all perished in that horrible crash. You have my deepest sympathy and I hope in some small waythis message brings you some comfort.

I certainly remember your fathers tradegy. He was not one of my close associates in The squadron since we were in different sectors. Even though it has been 42 years since his demise I well remember. I occasionally flew the U 6 as well as being aMCCC. Buck Ewing. Crew S 03

The actual crash site is in a corn field about 3/4, maybe, 1mile due South of the marker. The power line they hit is still in service. Rudy D. Burd

How close is the historical marker to the actual crash site of the U-6A near Nebraska City? Any chance you can share your photos you took of the site? thanks. www.lincolnafb.com

My father was stationed at Lincoln AFB 1964-1965 with the missile sq. as a mechanic. Our first year we lived on Prestwick Rd and I attended Meadowlane Elementary School. Our second year we lived in family hosing (just outside the main gate). I remember, during the winter, Lincoln had a blizzard/winter storm. I had a fairly large paper route (100+ customers). My father spent several days in the missile silo, my mother would not allow me out to deliver the papers (my father had the one car). After several complaints from customers and the newspaper company threatened to replace me, my mother allowed me out. The winds were bowing hard along with the snow (you could not look forward), I had to push my bike through the driving blizzard until the 100+ customers had their paper. After that day, my mother would drive my father to the range then return home with the car.

Yes, I was still at Lincoln AFB when the crash of Maj, Craft and his MCC crew happened. I was assigned to the 551st SMS as a BMAT, and was processing for discharge when this event transpired. I was assigned to crew # S-49, a Senior Instructor crew commanded by Capt. Elmer T. Brooks (Later Brig General), Have been there some years ago and took pictures of the field where this happened. Talked to some local's whom recalled this tragedy, and one took me to the exact spot. He was on the scene while it was still burning. Worked with the Governor of Nebraska (Gov. Dave Hineman), and the state Historical Society to have a Marker installed recalling this. The marker is in place honoring these men. Former Staff Sgt Rudy D. Burd West Plains, MO.
