While sitting and watching a few Lapland Longspurs at Ensley Bottoms, these Western Meadowlarks flew in to forage close by. There has been a flock of six there this winter. Note the low contrast head pattern, yellow on the malar area, white sides, generally washed out coloration and particularly the cross barring on the tail where the light and dark bars run across the feathers. They also have a distinct flight pattern that can clue you in at a great distance.
