The piece on the left ( A. ) which is normally threaded to the bottom of the centre column for storage, is secured to the top of tripod. the head attachment is then secured to it (A. ).

I really like the boom function of this tripod, very handy for macro work.
very sturdy tripod and not too heavy, leg hinges are multi-position, all parts are replaceable, cost more than garden variety and it's worth it (this tripod replaces my other full size and mini).

A Slik Single Action Panhead. This has a bubble level on it to aid in levelling (obviously). The camera mount can be rotated or locked in position. Squeezing the trigger releases the ball grip to allow the pan head to be rotated in all 3-axis.

The Quantaray, Titan II, QTII. This is a good monopod, it is a little heavy but not real bad.
It is 23 inches long and extends to 66 inches when fully extended. This is good for the up high shot, you stand up and do not have to bend over trying to set up the shot. It has a standard head, not a ball type head. It is strong and has a foot hold on the bottom. It is only around $40.

It is 210mm long when collapsed, but extends to 300mm. The head locks very firmly without having to tighten the locking knob excessively. There is a quick release mechanism too

If you are looking for minipods, Giottos make some of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen. The pictures here are of a Giottos U-Pod. It is 210mm long when collapsed, but extends to 300mm. Everything about these Giottos minipods oozes quality, from the smooth action of all the moving parts, no doubt due to nylon bushing or some other internal mechanism, to the virtually unbreakable and unbendable legs and centre column. The head locks very firmly without having to tighten the locking knob excessively. There is a quick release mechanism too.
