Holywood Co. Down my hometown:

Holywood, a small town on the outskirts of Belfast, is distinguished by being the only town in Ireland to have a Maypole.
This originally was the mast of a Dutch ship grounded in 1700. The mast was given to the folks of Holywood in appreciation of their rescue efforts.
Also Holywood is the home town of legendary golfer Rory McIlroy. It was on the slopes of Holywood Golf Course that Rory honed his golfing skills. He attended the local schools St Patrick's Primary & Sullivan Upper.

What a great forum. This is Pat Frampton formerly of 28 Abbey Ring. I lived next door to Bobby Atcheson and across the street were the Jeffries and the Taylors. I left for Canada in 1964 but have been home many times. During my growing up in Holywood on Abbey Ring, my pals were Carol Thompson, Jean Nesbitt, Lesley McClenahan, Sandra Cummings, Helen Brogden, Elaine Brodgen, Alan Hamilton plus the gang from Knocknagoney and so on. Most of us were members of the Air Cadets. Fabulous memories of growing up in Abbey Ring.

My maiden name is Brady and my fathers family lived in holywood firstly sulllivan street which is now tescos car park and then Park Drive. My grandfather Charlie Brady had four children twins John (my dad) and Pat, Charlie and my lovely Aunt Lily who was the last of the family to live in holywood , she was also known as Betty. As children we spent every sunday and all summer in holywood so it was like our second home would love to hear from anyone who remembers my family take care everyone and fingers crossed x

Very nice site, my mother was born and raised in Holywood. Have visited and enjoyed the area. Very nice to see the pictures that bring back many fond memories. Remember being sent to an Italian ice cream shop on the main street for 99 and sliders. They would wrap them in paper and I would run all the way up Downshire Road to get them home before they melted. Thanks for the memories. Steve

Wow very good site, I'm interested in Jacksons Road, There is an old house just at the entrance to the forest, I remember as a child seeing a plate on the wall of this house denoting that it was the original house of the Jackson family before moving to Carrick, hence Jacksons Road. Yet I can not find anything about this house on the internet. Maybe some detective out there could explore deeper and add it to this wonderful site.

Some great photos on this site of Holywood. Well done. I was Marie Delaney but am now Cruickshank living in Scotland. My father was headmaster at St Patrick's. We lived in Windsor Avenue and the Togneri's lived next door. They moved to just outside Bangor years ago and then went "down south" after that. I would imagine that Carina and Jackie would be still down there - don't know. Is anyone in contact with them? Hi carole, Yes its only pronounced Hollywood, I just thought why. Have been in Hospital again, this time it was a seizure, will have to have a MRI scan to match up with a CT scan I had earlier. Still seeing the surgeon every 4 months for my mouth cancer, after 3 operations its looking ok. According to history it was inhabited by monks so it was named Holy wood but I presume over time it's pronounciation was changed but the spelling stayed the same. Hello Sue,,I have been living in Sydney Aust since 1967 but my family still live in Holywood. There would older residents who would remember the Hanna family. I will check with my sister& Brother and will email you. Holywood was/ is a lovely town to grow up in. It has grown in the past years since I grew up there but has a lovely community feel about it, I hope you picked that up that on the website. The Hanna family still lived there until the 1950s when it was redeveloped. I was born there too. .Most residents were moved to the new 'White City' estate. They lived in a street called 'The Green'. Maybe you could check a later Census for the family of Samual

I remember a lot of the names. Patsy O Kane eating winkles and throwung the shells over the pavement, his brother Mike who own the Maypole before Ned and later his son Brian. McKenna's shop, always painted green and the Nesbitts next door always painted red. Prior to the Nesbitts the shop was owned by Mrs. Millleton who always had a better selection of sweets. To Ken Robinson, I live in Sydney, but our 1st house in the White City (ex-The iconic Hill St). Was next door to the McNally's, Gavin was about my age ,also the Rutledge's. They lived on the left hand side near the top. We then moved across to number 5 The Green until 1959 when we moved toOld Holywood Rd at the top of Jacksons Rd (the original football field). Do you remember David McGaughey & Gorden Greer ? So many great families & friends. Are you old enough to remember the great street party organised for the Queen's Coronation in June1953 ?.We couldn't imagine then we would ever see the 60th Jubilee. Where did you live before The Green ?

I worked in Togs for a while years ago and remeber Bells having the best sausage rolls ever. Also Kearneys on the corner where Oxfam is and Laverys chemist etc :-)

Hi Again, Lived in Abbots Wood in the ‘60s through ‘71. Across the street in Abbots Wood lived Audrey McCune, Freda Dunwoody, Paddy Turner, Katie Oliver, Robert and Richard (Twins) Oliver, Down the street John and Earnest Jackson, Billie Coburn, Used to ride with me on my Honda Davy Gibson, Hung around with us Norman Hughes. In 1965 there was a “no alcohol” .. . “nightclub” in a house right next to Johnnie the Jig … used to serve lemonade etc. Essentially a church outreach group. Big trip from Holywood was to the Maritime Club or the Jazzclub in Belfast to see Van Morrison playing in the rock group Them before it broke up. Do you remember the Holywood movie theater (flea house) had a couple of “double seats “ with no armrest in between … all the way on the right at the back just for the romantic couples? Saw Fist Full of Dollars first time there. Across from the movie theater was Dusty McJeffery’s house … he rode a Gilera motor bike and played guitar. What a joy to discover this site! Jim McCuish

just found this site oh what memories of old holywood.I remember Jimpy lennoxs shop, Togs the sit in chippy where Coast is now they had a juke box Alexanders owned it for a while I remember all the wee shops Faghys where stewart millars is now.I have lived here all my life my granny mary lived in woodlands beside Cranes the Dawkins lived there huddlestons swains lots of locals who have now moved on.It was a lovely wee town which has got a bit lost over the years.Does anyone remember the horse trough at the old priory where did it go?I remember we had a civic week in the 70s we need to have another one just to help us remember what a great wee town this is and what good stock we come from.

I lived in Trevor Street & I think I remember a shop at the bottom called Dunlop's - bike shop? There was also McCaw's at the top and Elliot's sweet shop on Downshire Rd. I was friends with Marilyn Shaw (r.i.p) and am still friends with Katie Oliver from Abbey Road. I went to St Paddy's and Marie Cruikshank (Delaney) & I contact each other now & again! I remember Laurence Downey, Patrick Kelly, David Donnelly, Ann Carty, Anne McConnell and lots of others. Hi to Paul Logan too.I live in france but I'll be coming back soon to see Rosaleen Neeson from the Kinnegar. I'm sure it'll be like stepping back in time even though things have changed quite a bit. I remember ur mum Maureen, she'd be about 61 and she had a sister called Carol. Their mum I think was called Vera who died when they were quite young. I know this because she was formerly Sims and my family were related to the Sims family.

Jimmy Jackson's shop was in Church Road, and I think you might mean Riverston House, Church Road (Murphy's field and The Moat - all my childhood playground inthe 1950's). My school pals at Holywood Primary were as follows: Joe Campbell, John Jones, Denis Dawkins, Ernest Herron, Ossie and Billy Stringer, Jim Nesbitt, Terence Black, Alex Caldwell, Jim Patterson, Joe Scott, Rosalie Rimron (her mother was our teacher), Christine Robertson, Heather Little, Janet Geddes, Eizabeth Baguely, Helen Miller. Robert Miller and possibly a few more I can't remember!! I lived in the Church Road dead opposite Murphy's, and remember all the old characters like Patsy O'Kane, Jimpy Lennox, Mr Finlay (the Soap manufacturer) and others. Hi All. It's a pity this wee site doesn't get more comments and news but I suppose Facebook is more immediate....Does anyone remember the dance school in the 50's held in the King Edward hall (before the Social club existed ). ? It was mainly Tap Dancing with Ballet also. (We were no threat to Margot Fonteyn ). Every Thursday? The teacher was a lovely girl from Bangor and classes taught there as well... I remember a great Concert. There were about 10 Dances from Tap to Can Can. Our Mum's had to make a different costume for each one. A brilliant night (the hall was full) but unfortunatly I don't know if any photos were taken of the night.We also attended Red Cross classes on another day. Learning all about First Aid etc.. I was born in Holywood in 57a nd lived lived there till 71, mainly in Redburn, been in England a lot of years and last back 'HOME' 5 years ago. Mother was Amelia Herron, so still got lots of family ties. Hope i will get back next year, if not before, Holywood has changed a lot but to me its only cosmetic because the people are still the same friendy folk and i hope one day my (3rd ) wife and i may retire to the village of my birth. i am glad i found this lovely site with some wonderful picyures.

Hi my name is Carole Hamilton (nee Culbert). I lived at 16 The Green from 1951 until 1971. Unlike most people on this site I have remained in Holywood and now live in what was the old Strand area. Some names to add to the Green that I recall are Noel and Noreen Fox, the Cooleys, Frankie and Ken Robinbson, the Murphys, Eagans, Wagstaffs and Gibsons. It was a brilliant place to live and I always remember my mu m quoting a remark that that Miss King (the lady from N.I. Housing Trust as it was then known as) had said The Green was a special place in the estate and she only allocated the best of families there. I certainly agree that she did 'cos it was a special place to live and grow up in. Why is it we seemed to have beautiful summers then or are my glasses rose tinted. They're talking about building houses on the famous green area, unbearable to think of but I suppose that progress. Even the Oakley Avenue kids used to come and play football, cricket etc., on our patch, but nevertheless we all got on well together . I have been married to the same guy for 38 years. Robert lived at 167 Abbey Ring whose house backed out onto the second field as we called it then. When we first met he joked with me about the Abbey Ring guys thought "The Green " ones were a cut above them, a bit of friendly rivalry I guess. The Green always evokes happy memories of my childhood there and will always have a special place in my heart. Keep up the memories.

just found your site, and it made me cry, oh Holywood how i miss thee, or is it the childhood memories that i miss so much, St patricks school, the reading room , dances in the queens hall on a saturday night. I remember falling off the peir, looking for haunted houses up the woods, goodness i could write a book and am sure we all could , what a great place to grow up in the 50's and 60's, been gone 35 years and never been back, maybe one day soon.

hi madeline, thanks for the reply, of course i remember you and your mum indeed i have a photo of all the mums in the green taken on the coronation and they are all out wearing their fancy aprons. i do remember playing ball i'm sure the Cromies who lived beside the arch could have seen us far enough. After i married i went to live in Downpatrick and then later to Lisburn but i am so glad to be back in Holywood. Do you remember when the grass used to be cut . It kept us amused nearly all summer. You Mum went to the Co-op Guild with my Mum.You Mum's maiden name was Maureen Marshall. Is that right ? I had an e-mail from David Thompson No. 10 The Green , near my cousin Thomas Hunter and the Briggs. He lives in Dunfermline Scotland. You will have found a few names scrolling down this site. Where did you live before going back to Holywood ? My sister & brother are still in Holywood but when I got married in 1966, My husband and I moved to Sydney Australia but I have been back a few times. Last time was Summer 2007. Do you remember the Coronation party the Mother's committee organised in 1953 ? Playing Ball under the Arch. Playing house, in the field before the community centre was built. We made the tables & chairs with bricks from the new houses being built. Lighting a fire up the woods near the ravine and roasting potatoes. Hi Madeline I'm fine. My wife Christine is in Airdrie babysitting for our daughter Wendy. We have 3 granddaughters Anah is 12 and the twins Lauren and Stacey are 9. No more like twins than fly in the air. Lauren is a redhead and Stacey is slightly taller and blonde. Have not seen my sisters for ages. Mavis, Christine and Rosemary. I live about 4 miles from Mavis and Rosemary and about 7 miles from Christine, its a pretty little village called Cairneyhill, near Dunfermline. Every year it wins first prize as the best kept large village in Fife. Starting to get dark here at 9.15pm with heavy thundery showers. Have a nice day. Hi Dave, My sister remembers Tony Hill, being 65 he probably would have been in my brother's class. I can't really remember him. I'm the youngest of three until my brother kerry was born in t 5 The Green in 1957.............How are you anyway ? I have had my 3 grandchildren at my house for the day. Winter school holidays. They are 3 little gems. Soon to beage 12,10 & 8. In true Harry Potter style they like to create ' potions'... Food colouring plus a few extras like pepper, vinegar salt , plenty of water...... the joys of an innocent childhood, they are going on holidays to Hawaii soon so are eager to earn spending money, so my car & windows are pretty clean & they want to start on the garden tomorrow, easy money pulling out a few weeds & brushing up a few (lots) of leaves from neighbours trees overhanging my property. They have lots of other interests. Liam follows Man U & Arsenal, but was on the Tottenham Hotspers Website today. (Danny Blanchflower ) Its Been so long. My favourite player was Harry Gregg.......(What about the World Cup.......NI Qualifying in the last 16......Hopefully Australia will get a bit further than 2006 , last 16 wasn't too bad for such a young contender..........bye for now..

Yes David, your right about the roads. I was telling a work collegue about Holywood and how great it is - - well I tell anybody who listens - He has always lived in metro Sydney and reckons when he wins the lottery he will visit NI. On one of our radio stations this morning a person from Co Down rang the station through the internet to say he was enjoying the music, they play 24 hour music. Nothing later then the 70s. I couldn't listen to it that much, I prefer talkback. Anyway I still work and really enjoy it. Travel time 18 mins home to work and no traffic jams which is somethng in a city the size of Sydney. Glad to see new photos. None of the Twisel Bridge, but the last I walked through it 3 years ago it was so dark & dank, you would be hard pressed to get a clear picture. Would need a good high pressure water clean. Any Ned's customers out there ? I wouldn't a Friday or Sunday night there.Hi Brian

To David Thompson, Yes David, I do remember you, and I also remember your Mum. She was very good looking and blonde. My sister has a photo of all the Mums who organised the street party in the Green on Coronation day 1953, your Mum is in it . Do you remember that ? Great day, fantastic food (no fast food garbage in those days) games and fun all day. Didn't get to watch the actual coronation on TV as we were all outside having fun. Actually I don't think we had a TV then. I think I was older when Mum & Dad bought our first TV from Ballagh's down the front street in Holywood. Before I go......... What are the official names of the Front Road & The Back Road ?. Even to this day when I am home I will tell my sister Pat that I will walk in the back road to church and she will drive from the other end of town from the Old Holywood Road and usually pick me up between Abbotts Wood and the Golf Club.

I remember Whites Taxis. My mum and Dad was Pat and Alex Miller. My mum was very friendly with Cathleen and as a child I remember going to Whites taxis not always to get a taxi maybe just so my mum and Cathleen could have a chat over a cuppa. That was about 25 yrs ago maybe more. I'm sure if you mention my mums name to Cathleen she would remember her. Unfortunately my mum died 2 years ago.

Hi, I am from Holywood and now live in a lovely little town rather like Holywood in the north of Scotland called Nairn. (by the sea, golfing etc). I must have left Holywood something like 40 years ago!It is great to see the Holywood Players are still going as my father (John Delaney) used to be a member or directed when I was small! I went to St Patricks and have been in contact with Madeline (Dunlop) Daly who is in Sydney. My father used to teach us -- awful for the daughter of the headmaster in those days!! Does anyone know where Christoper Townsend has gone or what happened him? He did live in Marino/Cultra and was in my class in St Patricks but I think may have moved to Manchester. anyone from holywood remember the nesbit family?they used to have a shop on the left just before the bad bend at the graveyard im trying to trace nipper they were all small people but very nice to a blow in from belfast

David Thompson mbe I remember Madeline Dunlop from the Green i lived at no 10 in the fifties along with Tommy Hunter, Victor Briggs, David Dyer, Alan Craythorn, David Culbert, Noel Fox, Billy and Ossie Stringer, Muriel Bustard, David Murphy and Malachy Rowan I also remember all those wonderful places you mentioned, great times and great summers I left Holywood in 1958 and now live in Dunfermline Scotland I have just retired.

Hi, My name is Madeline Daly nee DUNLOP. I went to St Patrick's school. Holywood with someone you will all know - Brian Carty of The Maypole Bar fame (Ned's). Would like to trace some people from that era. I lived in Hill Street then The Green when it was brand new, No 37 then No 5. & remember the rest of the estate ( Abbey Ring etc). being built. but I am now a long time resident of Sydney Australia but just love to visit Holywood any chance I get. For a long time my Family lived on Old Holywood Rd near Jackson's Rd To David Donaghy (below) I believe you grew up with my cousins the Alexanders at Woodlands , I remember your Mum Betty. Holywood was the Best place to grow up in. Summers spent swimming at Clanbrassil & Rockport, Easter picnics up The Woods, roaming over the old Redburn Estate before the Housing estate was built. Visiting Woodlands via The Twisel Bridge. Along the Kinnegar at Low Tide looking for Crabs, I could go on all day.................Buying sweets at Miss Elliott.'s shop bottom of Downshire Rd, Saturday afternoon at the ...Holywood Picture House Matinee.............

Hi, my name is Lawrence Downey and I went to St.Patrick's primary school in Holywood 56-62 and have many happy memories from this period. I remember when the school bell went at 3.30, I was off like a shot to thechildren's playground beside the statue of Johnny The Jig and then if time permitted I might head down to the seafront. On days when the tide was out, I used to love walking over the shells as far out as I could from the shore, losing all track of time.. I have recently taken up songwriting and have decided to write a song about my childhood days in Holywood. I've probably got enough ideas, but if anyone wants to share any memories from around the same period, I might be able to use them in the song. For example I can still remember the meat and potato pies I used to get from Bells and buying a glass of lemonade in what I think may have been an earlier location for Bells. I think I may also have enjoyed meat and potato pie at the same location, a shop/cafe opposite the old cinema, so I think it might have been Bells before they moved to Church Road near the Maypole. I have lived on and off, most of my life in Holywood.and currently reside in the town. I still love Holywood and love living here, as Sinatra would say "It's my kinda town"

does anyone remember maureen jackson?she went to holywood secondary in 1961 & lived on church road with her granparents.she worked in bells bakery until getting married in 1973 then she moved to england.she still has family living in holywood & is coming over to visit in august this year.
