This section of the highway is narrow, and winds through an old growth forest leading to the Deception Pass bridges. It is also very busy. The corridor through the trees is always scenic and there are times when it is so spectacular that traffic backs up as drivers slow to take it in. I decided to start figuring out how to photograph the scene. This was my first attempt. I tried using a 15-stop ND filter and extended exposure to mask the traffic but headlights are bright enough to show through. I did not realize what it would be like close to the edge of the pavement as hundreds of cars and trucks roared by a few feet away. Buffeted by wind, noise and exhaust,it was very uncomfortable.
