My Hometown: Claremont NH

Hometown of this photographer. Claremont, once a thriving milltown, is the largest "city" (pop. 13,000+) in Sullivan County located along the Connecticut River in western NH. The home of one of the oldest, continuously active, high school (Stevens High) alumni assocation in the country...go Cardinals!

I think the pizza joint on lower main st was called Tony's Pizza. It was run by the Rondinoni (sp) fam.Was born and raised in Claremont and left the area in 1961 for Cal. I feel so sad when I see what has to the town.

My Aunt Bea Allison used to live where the Burger King is. Used to have a big barn for auctions. Big White Farmhouse. Gone... My grandmother Eva Nolin was from Claremont and I am looking for any information on the Nolin Family. She lived in the house.

Thanks for the great photos! I am doing a model railroad based on the Claremont and Concord, and a friend pointed me to the Merrimack Farmers Building photo.From there I looked at the rest of the album. I lived there from 1945-1960 while my father owned a children's wear shop (Tot & Teen). It didn't do very well, as Claremont was unfortunately in decline even back then. I still consider it my home town :-)

i moved to claremont in 1974 and had some of the best times of my life there.so sad to see it change from its glory days.i met some awesome friends there and will remember those times forever

Probably one of the saddest things for me is remembering the homes on the hill I grew up on in Claremont, my old address being 34 Broad Street where my mom had her Antique Shop called the Wedgewood Manor, all being torn down except for one house saved as a historical landmark and moved to the top of the hill I believe. Urban Renewal. Most children go back home and point to the house they grew up in - I go back home and look at what has replaced those homes shaking my head, thinking; "Forgive them for they knew not what they were doing." Steve, Claremont was an excellent thriving city to have grown up in, prior to the70's. Sad, to see some of the old estates torn down, turned into sub-divisions or duplexes. Have fond memories of good times and friends, as well as classmates. Hope Claremont can return to it's former glory.

My Dad was born in Claremont. He lived with his Mother, Father and eight other children. He was born on Spring Street, and his Mother(my Grandmother didn't speak english too much as she was born in Russia along with her husband and came over to the U.S. in the early 1900s and settled in Claremont on Srping St. My Dad and his siblings attened Stevens High and they all graduated from there and all the boys went in to the service. I remember my grandmotherrs house well. The elementry school that they attened was the North street school which was just a jump over the backyard fence to get th school. I remember most of these photos that were taken, however I didn't see one of the North Street School but would like to see a photo of it. Also Moody park when there was swings and a seesaw and slide. I remember as a little girl swinging on those swings, when my Dad would take me to Claremont to see my Granmother. Thanks for the photos. Trisha Soboll

Talked to Dale Vittum today,old friend when I lived there.He said a Gendron was in charge of the web site.I knew Louie Gendron ,my wife Virginia worked with him in Joy.I had a business there, The Clam Hut.Left Claremont in 1995,lived & traveled US in a motor home for 12 years,now live in Hernando Beach,Fl.We go back about every year.SHS '59. I agree with Mitch, The photos are good. Having lived and owned a business in the area, (Newmont Homes and Kellyville Tires), Clearmont and Newport served me as "MY HOME TOWNS", with Clearmont being my town for religion activities, as a member of the Jewish Community.

A great town to spend those 20 years in - I explored every nooke & crannie by bicycle-they were great days - great pictures that bring back good memories!
