The farmhouse, also called stolp or stelp, developed around the 16th century from the farmhouse with a separate haystack that was later added to the house. This eventually resulted in a farm type with a sophisticated, square plan, the North Holland bell jar. This is characterized by a closed square building mass with a high pyramid roof, under which all functions of the farm are housed, livestock shed, hay and cart storage, tools and the housing of the farming family. A high haystack is located in the center, between the four uprights (the square).
