Right of way, Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Washington, 2009

A female black tail deer guides its fawn through the intricacies of the parking lot at Olympic National Park’s Hurricane Ridge viewing area. Not a person is in sight here – just a long row of machines. Somehow, the mother knows exactly where to go in order to find the pedestrian walkway. It is an incongruous situation, made more so by the absence of human beings.

The deer helps the fawn to get used to life among humans here -- as I mentioned, she acts as a guide.

I agree, the incongruity in this picture is how the deer make use of the side walk. Makes me think the dove is giving her child a lesson in traffic safety...just as when you start with your first driving class...start at the parking lot before heading to heavier trafficked roads...

Thanks, Rose. They were on the grass, but they use the parking lot and sidewalks to get from one grassy area to another here.

I feel the incongruity because I would expect to see deer on the grass, not ambling on the concrete. I would guess it hurts their knees and hooves to be on concrete and they would then avoid it. But animals are smart, and this mother appears to know exactly what she's doing. Great catch!
