Within the shadows, Phoenix, Arizona, 2010

As the morning sun painted this glass brick wall with light, I noticed how it falls short of illuminating a primitive doll seated in the corner.The doll, a figure holding small children, comes to us within the shadow as an atmospheric surprise, a metaphor for a spirit that seeks the light but yet cannot reach it. Using the spot metering mode, I exposed for the light, letting the rest of the image fall into shadow.

Thanks, Tim, for seeing the contrast between the energy of the living light and the almost embalmed doll that sits within the shadows. There is indeed an yin/yang relationship going on between them.

There is so much to see in the light - It is almost ghost-like - and so alive. The light seems alive while the human representations seem dead. A very yin/yang image.

The light passing through glass brick wall drew me to the scene, but the light itself was not enough for expression -- I needed some context for that to light to play against. Those dolls you see peering through the shadows provided it, Ann.

I love the light on the window and the dolls peering from the shadows. Perhaps they're shy of the light.

The markings in the glass bricks add character to the translucence here -- thanks, Carol, for noting this. The dolls no doubt enjoy the natural light, but because they are dolls, they are unable to see the outside world.

I especially love the markings lit up by the sun on the square bricks! The doll collection must love peering out of the windows to the outside. The nice tilework also adds a nice border pattern of interest to this image.
