Tuskers at Sunset, Amboseli National Park, Kenya, 2002

Of all the elephant photographs I've made over the years in Africa, this one is my favorite. As the sun went down in Kenya's Amboseli National Park, two foraging elephants drew ever closer to us. They moved at a trot, head to head, tusk to tusk, in perfect rhythm. As the warm light turned their grey hides to a reddish gold, they seemed to be smiling as they brushed past me. It was one of those rare opportunities to make a photograph when everything had fallen into place simultaneously -- an endangered subject, a perfect vantage point, and golden light to intensify the meaning of this special moment in time.

You are right as usual, Hina. I call this time the "Golden Hour" although sometimes it seems as if it is only a "Golden Minute!"

i love the magic moment too, it is only a few minutes time, but i enjoy it the most, and love to take photos of magic hour when it comes to natural light photography.

Thanks, Anna, for grasping my intention here. What you seeing are beasts on the edge of extinction. Only they don't know it as they roam through this golden scene.

The setting sun gives a feeling of the Age of Dinosaurs in this picture, in my mind, Phil. And those elephants like the dinosaurs becoming extinct. A sad feeling, the end of their day.

Thanks, Jeff or Amanda, for taking the time to go over my galleries. I have posted them in the hopes that others might learn from them, and apparently it is working for you. I'm delighted that you are able to take something away after each session, and I promise to continue to add new images and ideas to these galleries in the days and weeks to come. Stay tuned!
