Gallery Eleven: Aspects of Antarctica – a travel photo-essay

A photo-essay is a group of photographs that can cumulatively add up to more meaning than an individual photo. It differs from a picture story, which is narrative in form, and relies heavily on text and captions. A photo essay is more interpretive and symbolic in form. Words offer context, but images good enough to use in a photographic essay usually can convey considerable meaning on their own. They work cumulatively – each image offering insights that others do not.

In this gallery, I offer a 15 image photographic essay on aspects of Antarctica. I shot all of these pictures with a Canon G5 digital camera in January 2004 on the Antarctic Peninsula and its nearby islands. Each image makes use of the principles I’ve discussed in the previous chapters of this cyberbook on expressive travel photography. A photo-essay is as much the work of a photo-editor as it is the work of a photographer. I have sequenced them so that each image leads to the next. I have also
arranged groups of images within the essay to create stories with a story. Cumulatively, I hope that the sum of all of these images will bring more meaning, insights and understanding to the viewer than any individual photograph could.

(To see other photographs I could have also chosen to use in this essay, but did not, go to: http://www.pnd1.smugmug.com/ )

This gallery is presented in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a detailed caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
