I observe many birds on Lake Morton in Lakeland Fl. I saw many Wood Strokes and did not know what kind of bird they were. Lakeland also is the home of Queen Elizabeth's beautiful descendants of the Black Swans. Thank for your beautiful photos. If you see a Black Indigo Snake indigenous of Florida please photograph it, they are beautiful. I've observed two since 2000 when I moved here.

i just took a picture of a bird in my waterway Spring Hill Fl . Bottom was Black or dark brown . Neck and head was tan, had a diffinate line between colors. I have a cell phone photo but i can't blow it up as to get a good picture. I see no pictures in here. I can send it to you I think. A P

Just returned from the Keys. Saw flickers of birds to quick to identify or too far away without proper equipment. But while walking to my favorite Starbucks on successive a.m.'s at mile marker 101 a saw a flock (13) of robin size but starling acting birds. They exhibited whit spots on wings and matching white spots (tail feathers)on tails. Much smaller when scavenging the parking lot than in flight. Short pecking beaks and pretty much black in body color. Spent lots of time on wires looking at paved parking lots, I assume for food. Any ideas, thanks Ron S.

I saw a flock of 75 plus birds this am at my water fountain they were the shape and color of a dove the bluegrey color with a black face a white circle around there eye and a yellow line across the end of there feathers, with a rust color belly, the stayed in the air while waiting for room at the water fountain, Can any one tell me what they were.

One of my kid drew 3 bird for the school license plate contest and the use you wonderful pic as reference. She did a great job with a little help from dad. LoL. The contest make every parent pay $20 to enter, the if the plate is picked the child gets $50.00 and the plate goes on sale at the registration office.

Sir I have seen big white bird flying in the sky at morning before Sun rise At 4.30. On the day of manipur earthquake I just run outside n see in northern side. This thing was seen by me and my brother but still I dint understand. Will u plize suggests me.

Thank you for a beautiful gallery of pictures! I enjoyed them immensely as I love to watch the birds when I take my grandsons to and from school. I am concerned over the birds that are missing from my yard. We used to have a lot of Blue Jays and Mocking Birds. I know my Meadow Larks disappeared because of the new homes being built. I have little cardinals that I thought should be larger than they are. Is this a different species of Cardinal? My Humming Birds are not around either. We have another small bird that I don't recognize and I was hoping to find its picture on your pages. They are sweet little birds that play around my carport. They spend their time in my Ligustrum bush and my Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Good evening, we are new to Florida and have put up some feeders in our yard with great attendance by neighboring birds. We have cardinals, blue jays, many mourning doves, and all have brought the new babies to share with. Well, for the last 2-3 weeks, we have had these little gray birds, about the size of a young blue jay. But they have no adult with them. They are all gray, but one of two have some red on their crowns. I believe they are songbirds, because I see them go up to the above head wires and sing for a bit after eating. I couldn't find a picture of them on your sight and they don't stay still long enough to grad a picture. Do you have an idea of what they might be?

Excellent photography. You have honed our craft well. I spotted 4 parrots in a palm tree just off the canal at my home in Ft. Lauderdale. The body is green, the heads have a dusky blue-gray cap and there breasts are green. They have yellow beaks with white around there eyes. I'd love to know what they are. Thanks again for sharing such beautiful work..you inspire me to get out more.

Nice pictures. I am trying to identify a flock of birds that came to our pond recently. They are black with orange beaks and feet, swim in pairs in the water (probably mating) and look something like Daffy Duck! At night they are very loud for several hours. Do you happen to know what these are?

my neighbor has a pair of birds nesting in his house here in fort lauderdale there building there nest in a whole in the wall there black with yellow beaks and the have many different songs they sing any clue been here 18 years never seen one before

I have a beautiful bird that has been visiting my feeder for the last couple of years. It has a bluish purple head and body and the chest is a bright red. The female is more gray with yellow green throughout. They are beautiful and I would really like to know what they are. I live in Southwest Florida.

I have multi colored bird visiting one of my feeders. It has a blue head, red breast and underbody,irrescedent green shoulders and down the back. Ir is smaller than a cardinal. Any idea what it may be?

Here's a GHO cam in Oklahoma with 3 eggs, one has a pip today, 2/13/14! Mr. and Mrs. Tiger have been having babies in a planter box outside a little girl's bedroom window for the last 5 years. Go to UStream dot tv and search okcowlcam. It's fantastic!

Great photos! 12-year Englewood resident. My husband and I I love it here. I noticed your photos of the great horned owl babies. I'd read about it in the paper last year, about how people watched the little baby owlets grow and fledge. I learned about it too late! Can you describe how to visit her nest please? This is the only place I've found to ask. I'm a fan of some bird cams and would love to see the family that's in my own back yard! Thanks so much! Nancy :)

I am from UK and this September visited South Beach, Miami. There were some very funny birds on the beach, standing in a group. They had long black and red beaks, short red legs, black cap, black upper wings and white chest and underneath. Do you know what they might have been? Many thanks, Jenny

I was at a park North of Tampa and saw a large white bird with black markings, thought it might be a wood stork, but the head is smooth. Cant seem to figure it out, and my kids are curious. Wish I could send you the pic for your input, as you seem to know alot about the area birds.

You have terrific collection here. I had a Swallow tailed Kite fly over my head yesterday. I just kept on catching updrafts and floating above me. I live north of Tampa. I see a large variety of birds even in my backyard backed up to a wetland.

Great photos....I live on 5 acres and have 1/3 acre spring pond with feeders all around and a thousand fish..large mouth,blue gill, cat fish and lots of turtles. I have had owls, otters, wood ducks.....but my regulars are red tail hawks, blue birds, cardinals and spoonbills. I had 3 tiny babies in a hanging pot on my patio, Parents were very small and rust color. I see no way any thing could invade their nest. It hung from the ceiling. They built a top nest on it and used the bottom dirt left in the hanging plant as the foundation. I went away for a short while and last evening, checked the nest,empty! A puzzle to us all and quite a shock. Please tell us what you think could have happened,and also the type of little bird it was.. Thank you for all the beautiful pictures. Sherrie

Beautiful pictures. Today, I saw a very large greenish bird that walked across the road in front of my car. It was near Gainesville, FL .It was larger than a turkey and very pretty. Could it have been a peacock?

Richard I never have looked for bird pictures online but yesterday on our feeder I saw such an interesting bird I decided to look up pictures in effort to identify it...that is so funny I saw your comment after the first page of pics. The bird I saw was plump ,woodpecker coloring ..black and white with a red bib or throat area if i'm saying that right. .its tail feathers were mainly black with white mixed in but it's body shape was plump, Robin-like not woodpecker shape. let me know if u identify it.JAN

I live in Middleburg Fl. and this morning I saw on my feeder a woodpecker colored bird but instead of a red head it had a red bib. I thought it might be a female type woodpecker but have been unable to find it in pictures. Does anyone know?

Live in the woods beside a creek in Riverview. Lots of birds! One showed up this morning that I can't ID. Very small like a wabler, light beige on top, black eyes, beige/a little orange beak....beautiful blue bluff chest, bottom of the wings blue while it's eating on the platform feeder....end of tail feathers maybe black. Any thoughts? Your pictures are simply amazing. Took some pictures of the little fellow, but they aren't very good, much less the quality of yours....but I do have a friend I'll see Sunday who is a long time birder. Maybe he can shed some light.....:). Keep up the good work. Alan

Awesome photos! Thanks for sharing! My Husband & I enjoy watching birds in FL too! My husband saw a Cara Cara today! Have you ever spotted a Kestrel? They are pretty common in our area. (falcon family) Beautiful bird. was looking for a picture here!! What about Quail or Bobwhite? We used to see Quail frequently years ago... haven't seen one in a very long time. Guess they were pushed out of their habitat by all the building. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your gallery!!

I'm not sure I would sacrifice shutter speed for a few extra stops of aperture. It's occasionally a difficult decision to make even with a lot of light. Consider manual focus which I expect to be utilizing more when necessary. Enjoyed the tour.

Your photos are just gorgeous. I am new to bird watching and am just starting to take pictures with a camera that is not great, but I am enjoying it so much. I live minutes from two docks on St. Johns in Jacksonville and each time I go I see a new beautiful creature. My favorite and most dependable is an anhinga that is always in the same area either spread-winged or fishing! I believe it's a female. There is one bird I can't seem to identify and can't get a picture either (he flies too fast). They are pure black, about the size of a small heron, and I've never seen them still. Always flying. The mouth is partly open and it's not low over the water but not very high either. A loon? A cormorant? I've never seen pictures of loons or cormorants that are pitch black, however, so I'm unsure. Maybe you can help. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. These pictures are an inspiration!

My husband saw a brilliant red bird with grey head on our bird feeder yesterday. I haven't been able to identify the bird. It is smaller than a dove and larger than a cardinal. It didn't stick around long enough for a photo. Anyone know what bird this is?

last couple of days in Naples at the beach have seen a black bird (? tern) with white underwings, a red slash across its face, skimming along the water close to shore with its lower bill skimming now and again in the water. Anybody know what this is? thanks! Joe

This is a great site with tremendous photos. I am attempting to identify a bird that was flying in my community yesterday. It was large, about the size of an osprey, white underbelly, black head and a large split tail. It was causing a commotion with one of the local jays. I have not seen a picture of it on these pages.

I saw that bird in taylor and dixie county last weekend...The tail is a rounded V shape and it's black. The outter edges of the wings are black also. i would love to know it's name

We spotted a white bird with some black in its tail. It was the size and shape of a robin, only white. It was seen in a wooded area, here in Tampa Bay Florida. We have no clue as to its species. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Ron H.

I have a photo of a bird from Daytona Beach. It looks like a brown and white seagull type bird, but it has a long dark bill with orange around the part closest to its head. Almost toucan-like. It was hanging out with the other seagulls on the beach. I havent been able to find any pictures like it. Would you know what type of bird this is?

Dear Paul: Your pictures are magnificent! I live in NE Palm Bay, FL, along the Inidan River. I do my amateur bird/butterfly watching and try to plant natives and to attract birds to my backyard. However, I was just wondering if you knew or could find out it bluebirds every stop in my area? I have never seen one. I just started putting out live mealworms and am waiting to see if any pass through. I live about an hour and one-half south of Orlando? I know you are busy, but I would really like to know if I might see one someday (or a tufted titmouse for that matter). Thanks, Mary

Reply to LFox......In Audubon's Field Guide to Birds, there is a similiar bird ( if the green is a brownish green) It might be what u r looking to identify: Veery Catharus fuscesens is described as 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 " so may be too large.

I was trying to find a photo of a bird I saw for the first time today - a tiny little bird, about the size of a wren, but long legged, and green with a white and brown spotted throat. He walked a little like a sandpiper or wading bird, but he was so tiny. Can anyone identify it? THANKS, and thanks again for the great photos.

There is a wetland protected area behind our backyard, I see a white bird, with some black and a "V-like" tail flying by everyday. It flies quite low sometimes, so I can see the beak and it looks like a hawk's. This bird is absolutely beatiful and I would like to know if you know the name of it. You're website is absolutely amazing!!

We have a family of nesting bird in our back yard. I am a bird watcher and had not seen this breed before. Thanks to your sight I now know that they are Great Crested Flycatchers. They are active birds and fun to watch. Thank you, from Englewood, Florida

what is it? We were on the Withlacahoochie River and saw a very large, very graceful bird flying overhead. It had a tail like a barn swallow, but way bigger. Couldn't find a pix on your site. LOVE YOUR SITE

Hi there -- Rick, the coloration of the birds you describe is that of Eastern bluebirds; however, though small, they are somewhat larger than sparrows. Smaller than cardinals, though.

This is a great site and a wonderful resource.I have a photo taken at dusk near Lake Alice on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. The bird is in a tree at lakeshore and has a black body and a larger medium brown head. There is a white spot on a folded wing. The picture was taken by zoom at a distance of about 100 yards and before I could get other shots he was gone. I didn't get to see him fly. It is nothing like any bird shown on this site. I would be pleased to send you the photo so you might identify it.

I came to SW Florida 4 months ago, but just went to the beach for the first time a few days ago. Fell in love with some of the birds there and trying to identify them. Hopefully everyone on here is a bird lover and I will hear no more comments about feeding them alka seltzer, etc. They were all on the beach. One I think i have identified as a striped bill gull... another looked like a classic sea gull. Then there were these small birds that were right at the waters edge, poking in the sand. Can anyone help me with identifying them?

I have seen a ccouple of birds hangin around lately, that i have never seen before.I'm wondering what they are....they are sparrow sized....with the most beautiful...blue-purple-ish colored backs...and a chestnut brown colored underbelly....I've only seen 2 of them(always together)....and no others....can anyone name these beauties? We too have seen these birds with the vee tail....they are white bellies, white heads...very distinct vee tail...they glide. Please if anyone knows what they are, we are so curious. thanks

I am wondering what these birds are that are nesting in the citrus trees in my back yard. They look a little like some of the pictures I've seen on another website that are described as a female redwing blackbird. However, it's hard to tell because they look a little different from those pictures. This bird is somewhat larger than the small songbirds, about the size of a blue jay. They have a reddish brown back, some stripey markings on the wings when not in flight, and a very mottled almost stripey effect on the underside in white, black and brown. If anyone knows what kind of bird this is I would be glad to know, just curious you know.
