Common Redpolls breed in Alaska and across northern Canada. Wintering in the southern portions of their breeding range they seldom range further south than the far northern United States. They are irregular and casual in Pennsylvania winters. In irruptive years such as this year, they can be abundant in large flocks or flocks of just a few individuals. Many years can pass when they are very rare or absent altogether.
I first photographed these Redpolls at a private residence in South Eastern Adams County on January 21, 2008.
