Paula, bluebonnets and most of our Texas wildflowers germinate in the fall, so planting in the late summer would be best. That said, there are other lupine species that are better suited for much colder climates - such as those the bloom in Crested Butte, Colorado (Lupinus argenteus) and those that bloom in Franconia Notch, Franconia, NH ( Lupinus Perennis)

I live in Indiana and actually found seeds for the Texas Blue Bonnets on-line on E-bay. I am looking forward to planting them as soon as it warms up a bit. I am visiting my daughter in Round Rock, TX for a couple of weeks right now so I am getting to see them up close and personal!!!

Marilyn, I pray you will experience a full and speedy recovery. If you have a chance to travel any while in MD, perhaps you will be able to visit one of the cousins of the bluebonnet in NH. It grew out of my own travels and fascination with our wonderful state flower and many other wildflowers we are blessed to have grow and thrive in Texas.

I am already missing the bluebonnets as I am in a rehab facility this Spring in the TX Hill Country. I plan to move to the mountains of Western MD this Fall when I am discharged and live with my sister, even though we are original Texans. I have always loved the bluebonnets!

Rich, In spite of a less than positive report we traveled from Chicago a week ago to explore the Hill Country in hopes of finding a few wildflowers to photograph. We are so grateful for your book that has led us on an 800+mile journey through some wonderful Hill Countryside! Finding huge fields of blossoms would have been a bonus but we now have a dose of the area and eager to return. We were fortunate to capture a few images to take home along with wonderful memories of the area, people we met, learning the history et all. Thanks again for all the effort you put into "Hunting Texas Wildflowers" it provided us with a roadmap for a wonderful trip! Colin & Jerri Haase--Western Springs, IL.

I love your photographs of the bluebonnets. I made a video of the Ennis Bluebonnet Festival this weekend. It is the official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas and is designated the official Bluebonnet City of Texas. Bluebonnets are very special to me so thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures.

Sel, Bluebonnets bloom in Texas between March-April. However, I have gotten reports of some bluebonnets blooming as early as February and as late as August, but the major displays usually peak between April 1-19. Hi and thanks for sharing such wonderful pictures of the Texas Bluebonnets i sure miss these wildflowers i live in Arizona i have been here for 22 yrs now and recently i have been looking for the seeds to grow Bluebonnets in my yard and no one seems to even know what they are. It really make me feel sad that Arizonians do not care for them at all. I would like to know if any one know where i can buy some of the seeds. Thank you. Estelle

I am a Texan who was transplanted to Oklahoma 23 years ago. I was so hoping to make a trip to see the bluebonnets this year but the plans fell through. For locations close to McKinney, you can try Cedar Hill State Park or Ennis. This year is a tough year for bluebonnets due to the drought. The best areas in Texas this year are between Brenham and Woodlands - north and west of Houston. You can follow our wildflower reports at: http://community.wildflowerhaven.com/forums/

Your images are so amazing. I really felt like I was in the Texas countryside as I experienced your photos - the simplicity, the beauty, the expansiveness. I have yet to see a natural floral display like a sea of bluebonnets, whether they spread across a quiet pasture or ride the gentle waves of the hill country.

Thanks so much! We left Texas in 2000 and we've missed bluebonnets since...almost an ache at times. The flowers in NC are lovely and everywhere, esp the roadside. We're now in CO and while we have a sorry little cousin of the bluebonnet, not the real thing. So this is a substitute. We moved here voluntarily as we felt a need to be 'ambassadors from Tx' to visit this long-departed part of our state. We tell natives that we came to live here to make sure they were doing it right and not forgetting their heritage as Texans first. They do NOT like that ;) Now to convince them not to put beans in their chili and there is no such thing as vegetarian chili.

I AM A NATIVE TEXAS TRANSPLANTED TO WASHINGTON STATE. I MISS THE BLUEBONNETS SO MUCH AND RECENTLY WAS ABLE TO GET SOME SEEDS AND CULTIVATE THEM HERE & IN SCOTLAND IN POTS. SINCE IT STAYS COOL HERE IN THE SUMMER THEY BLOOM TILL SEPTEMBER AS LONG AS I DON'T LET THEM GET TOO WET. The funniest bluebonnet story ever: Someone planted a patch of bluebonnets up the street from the Oklahoma State Capitol!!! Believe it or not, they are growing like wildfire! It makes this Texan very happy to see my state flower here! :)

Wow! What a refreshing break from my life here in Hell. I tried planting bluebonnet seeds when I moved out here but they just are NOT going to grow in the desert! Alas, I have less than 82 hours before I land at the airport in Austin to head for the hill country, leaving Las Vegas in the dusr. My ex-husband sent me the link to this website. What a nice guy!

These are absolutely GORGEOUS photos. Being a native Texan, I have a passion for them, and for the first time in my lifetime, we're having a White Easter! I went out today and took some photos of the Bluebonnets in the snow! Since this is the first time it's snowed on Easter since 1938, I imagine this will be my one-time-in-a-lifetime opportunity. What a perfect sign of God's blessings, and thank you for sharing your lovely photos.

With the lack of rain and rumor that the bluebonnet season hasn't been that great we haven't traveled to see in a long time, not to mention the cost of gas.
