A Fine Line

I have been a family doctor for over 30 years now. We’ve gone through periods of
SARS, H1N1 flu epidemics, AIDS but never quite a pandemic like this one.
Millions of people infected and the elderly is especially vulnerable for a fatal
outcome.
A lot of my patients are in the elderly age groups. Seventies, eighties, nineties
and a few have made it past their one hundredth birthdays.
At the height of the outbreak, it was a fine line to keep them safe at home and not expose them to the clinic,
at the same time to manage and not neglect their multiple chronic health issues that require regular care.
For the most vulnerable folks, we kept in touch by regular
phone visits and if their conditions warranted, I would make a visit to their home.
Despite putting on all the protective gear, I worried that I may unknowingly introduce the virus into their homes.
Very happy to report that all my elderly patients are doing well and none have caught the virus.
Knock on wood!

Well done for doing a wonderful job Raymond...scary times ahead here in Sweden...where little is being done to protect people...I have been home since March...happy to be out in the Islands away from the hustle and bustle of Stockholm...Stay safe and healthy...BV

I hope you stay safe, Raymond. I have a couple of good friends who are in Family Practice and it certainly has been a difficult time. Probably no more so than here in US where the politicization of a pandemic continues to produce the expected results.

I ditto Peter's sentiments - we can never repay doctors like you, the care workers and all those keeping up essential services. I am also very proud of our government's handling of this very difficult episode. V

I can’t say enough about you and all of our health care community. Your dedication to the care and health of your patients is beyond admirable. You risk yourself and your family each day, I can only imagine the stress on everyone working within our health system. Thank you for all you do. Best wishes to you and your family in these uncertain and dangerous times.

We all thank you for your selfless dedication to your patients in this era of complex medical and social issues. How tough this must be on you- and your family too. We are so lucky here in Canada, and I think, especially in BC..
