A Fine Line
I have been a family doctor for over 30 years now. We’ve gone through periods of
SARS, H1N1 flu epidemics, AIDS but never quite a pandemic like this one.
Millions of people infected and the elderly is especially vulnerable for a fatal
outcome.
A lot of my patients are in the elderly age groups. Seventies, eighties, nineties
and a few have made it past their one hundredth birthdays.
At the height of the outbreak, it was a fine line to keep them safe at home and not expose them to the clinic,
at the same time to manage and not neglect their multiple chronic health issues that require regular care.
For the most vulnerable folks, we kept in touch by regular
phone visits and if their conditions warranted, I would make a visit to their home.
Despite putting on all the protective gear, I worried that I may unknowingly introduce the virus into their homes.
Very happy to report that all my elderly patients are doing well and none have caught the virus.
Knock on wood!
