Crested Caracara

Jurong Birdpark, Singapore

Scientific name: Caracara cheriway (Jacquin, 1784). Also, called 'Northern Caracara'.

The caracara belongs to the falcon family. This bird can be observed perching on posts in savannas and palm groves. Caracaras are present along the Mexican - American Border,
from Baja California to Eastern Texas, then south to Panama. There are also isolated populations in Cuba, the Isle of Pines, Louisiana, and in Central Florida. This species feeds on
carrion and small animals. The caracara's voice is a harsh crackle. They are considered threatened in Florida due to habitat destruction.
