Paper Wasp

Polistes sp.

These beautiful wasps were nectaring on the shores of Pamlico Sound on Ocracoke Island.
I am not sure which species this is and hope that someone will be able to narrow it down for me.
My best guess is P. exclamans.

Ah....one of my favorite insects and great shot. They are infinitely fascinating. They used to build nests in my front entryway, but haven't done so in a few years. Loved watching the tender loving care the parents (parent?) gave to the larvae:http://www.pbase.com/isabel95/paperwasp

I was surprised at the number of species of Polistes. Sure a pretty one and it does look like other photos of P.exclamans from the area. Nice!
