i lived in turkey for several years and spent some time in Ekinanbari. it was summertime and we went for a stroll at t night to cool off l saw a large thing that looked like a catterpillar.it was about 6inchs long with fur over it and about 2 inchs across l used a stick to touch it gently and was amazed when it reared up and i saw its fangs. what on earth was it.

I also just found an interesting insect. It was knocked into the water at the pool in NC. It had the wings of a horse fly, the thorax of a bumble bee, and the abdomen of a black shiny water bug. Any clues to what it was?

Bruce I'm really not sure what type of insect you are talking about maybe you can look it up and good luck!I keep insects cause i love insects I mostly take care of grasshoppers spiders and ladybugs but sometimes I try new bugs to take care of every now and then. Have a great day:)

I am fascinated by all those insect creatures. Today found a cold creature which looked like a bee. It was a beauty. bringing it in the house it came back to life. In my car I saw the most beautiful small insect flying around. All together not quiet an inch long. Green long body with huge light green transparent wings. It looked like a young insect, not totally developed. Could not get it out by rolling down the windows. I finally got it on my finger and I could hardly get it shook off into the grass. My husband at home said I would never find out what it was. Well, I found this site and found it...GREEN LACEWING. Thank you

Great photos. Hiking in the wood after a very heavy rain and came across hundreds? thousands? of what I thought were insects skittering across the trail. On closer inspections they were shaped like a flattened out frog Very fast so could not catch one even in a photo. Any idea what they are?

A bug almost an inch long,fly like head,slender wings folded back on its body.But it's legs were amazing,they were flat to the floor in a sort of diamond shape on each side and it seemed uncomfortable walking in its surroundings,rear garden in midlands and when it flew it flew similar to a ladybird,very Irratic and kept landing awkwardly and flat on the ground.Dull in colour.Very wierd and I've never seen one before.Your photos are amazing by the way!!

Fabulous photos but the bug I'm looking for was about half an inch long,head quite fly like,folded back wings.But it's legs were amazing,they were flat to the floor and two pairs were crossed over like a diamond shape either side of its body and its walk was as if it didn't normally walk on land,The legs sort of flipped over when walking.Didnt appear to be comfortable with its surroundings,Irratic flying and landing.It just appeared from nowhere in my rear garden in the West Midlands about a month ago.Dull in colour.Flew a bit like a lady bird???? Would love to know what it was.

There are flying bee-like insects flying around some roses. They don't land. They are all yellow, round in shape, larger and fatter than the average bee. Their body doesn't seem to be partitioned. I can email a photo.

In July this year I had a fright of my life when a very large fat insect was flying around my mothers garden, it was the shape and size of my thumb and light brown or dark orange in colour, it looked like a flying grub. I have never seen anything this big and fat fly before. Despite trolling through many pictures of flying insects I have not found it.

Found a flying insect - thought it might be a bee - not sure. The head was covered in fur, much like a bumblebee but more noticeable. The tail was yellow and conical. The legs (I think 6) were like that of a wood spider, but sturdy, and were two colors. Does anyone know what it is?

Its body is about as fat as an average index finger. It is dead and given its size, I am quite happy that I was not in the garden while it was flying about! I cannot find out what it is - any ideas?

I found a brown, flying, insect and cannot identify the darn thing! It has the body of a dragonfly but only one set of Inge (which are veiny and clear) , with an ants head and long, straight, antennae. It has no visible mouth or sucker. I have been n the Internet for 2 hours and am still at a loss. Any ideas?

I saw this large flying insect going from flower to flower. It was so colorful that I noticed it from 50+ feet away. It had a green upper body and a large triangular shaped lower body that was solid orange. The wings were translucent and it was about 2 inches in length. I got verry close to it and it was remarkable due to it's size and color. I have never seen anything similar and have been searching online for over two hourd with nothing even close to what I saw. I live in central Massachusetts and it was late July. As I said, it was going from flower to flower collecting pollen. Any ides would be greatly appreciated!

I found a bug today with clear wings and a big black body. It had a face sort of like a frog, six legs, he had green wing "spokes" his back was very hard with almost a short fuzz... 1 to 2 inches long and seemingly nocturnal. I live in Minnesota, what could it be?

The reason I logged on to your site was to identity which kind of wasp we have so prevalently terrorizing us. They seem to love the shake shingles and our bushes. I have already knocked down several mud dauber like nests in corners and various spots around our house and under our eaves. They have a skinny body, but I am too fearful to get too close. I live out in the woods on the edge of town. I have children and several pets that frequent in and out of doors. I am scare to trim the bush I see them swarm from. I am quite certain they have some kind of nest in there. Do you have any other pictures of wasps and related insects; yellowjackets, mud daubers, hornets, etc??? Love your gallery. It was outstanding.

Alright so I am living on Beale AFB in Cali. and on a couple of occasions when I am watering the lawn these weird insects have appeared seemingly out of no where, i really do not know how to go about looking it up but maybe someone might know what I am talking about. They are almost like an oversized ant but the are BIG! they are yellow with black strips on the butt of them...i accidently stepped on one and it made the loudest crunch that i have ever heard...and a white milky fluid came out of it...its driving me nuts please tell what bug this is!!

I am in Eastern Massachusetts. I was walking down our upstairs hall when I saw something moving...it was the biggest wasp I have ever seen, walking on our carpet. I am no authority on bugs (and I have been an adult a lot of years), but this thing was huge. Its wings were long and narrow and away from its body and its posterior had yellow lines on it. It was shaped like a humongous yellow-jacket but from end to end I'd guess it was 1.5 inches long and probably a couple of inches wide. I've been on the web for 15 minutes trying to see what it was. I was worried at first it was a queen "something". Then I thought maybe a cicada killer (cicadas are due here soon, I am near cape cod). I managed to get a bunch of tissues around it and threw it outside. It probably escaped the tissues now. Any ideas?

in the court yard where i work there are some creatures, they look like a small smashed up pinecone, they are large in size and move very slowly, they are brown in color and look spikey, could this be some sort of gall? or is it and alien creature bug please help me identify, are they harmful to people, i work in a retirement home. thank for any imput.

we have a wierd bug visitng our screens. looks like a lacewing but has a long neck and giant pincers (almost prehistoric looking) and it's about 5 or 6 inches long (too scary to touch) -- we are dying to find out what it is! we live in the woods in New England (Douglas, Ma.) help!!!!!
