You commented on my gosling photo so I came to visit your site. I've spent the past few hours enjoying your galleries. A year ago we visited New Orleans for the first time and spent eight wonderful days walking the city. It brings a smile to remember the heat, the music, the people, the archetecture, the flowers, the food..... Your pictures showing Katrina's damage highlights how beautiful the restoration has been in City Park, a favourite place we visited. I will continue to watch your posting from my so much colder country.

I came across your pictures accidentally while trying to find out the opening times of the museum at Carville. They are beautiful. The doctor you refer to who took the five patients by coal barge to Carville in 1896 was my grandfather, Dr. Isadore Dyer, a dermatologist in New Orleans. Later to become the Dean of Tulane Medical School. In the 50's & 60's my father, also a physician, would take us to Carville on Sundays for picnics on the grounds and to visit with the Sisters of Charity. It is a unique place in America and hopefully will continue to serve as a testament to the many who lived and labored there for so many years.

Yes, I also have found my 40D quite sensitive to light at times...
I find myself shooting a number of stops over the recommended reading and even then the image is either to dark and lacks detail or it is washed out. I have learned to read my histogram and shoot accordingly and then do major post processing. I depend heavily on my HDR software and my Raw software in Lightroom 4. Bracketing is the only way to go in extreme light conditions....

Hi Coleen,
Many years ago I signed up for a workshop that was aimed at the inner-play between light and shadows. At the time I was shooting in B&W and developing my own images. I always remember that workshop and what that instructor taught me. To this day I still look for the inner-play between light and shadows..

Thank you very much for your nice comment on my Cascades water image...

Coleen, I am Tricia's husband (son in law of Reed's wife's sister Josephine). I understand you wrote a paper on Night Blooming Cereus that you were honored for. I have a couple of large ones, and would like to read your paper. I have had a lot of success with mine and have had as many as 20 blooms in a night on one of them. Could you tell me how I can get a copy? I can give you my email (lrome@entergy.com) and you could email it to me. Thank you

Coleen - I surely enjoyed viewing your many photos. I knew you had taken a lot but never dreamed you had taken so many. I especially enjoyed the sunsets. When I stand on my front porch in the country in the winter after the sugarcane harvest the sunsets are especially beautiful and sharp just like you show in your pictures. Keep giving us more and more. Gertie Beauford

We met at the Harvest Festival this past weekend when you stopped to look at my paintings I had displayed. Thanks so much for sharing your website info, I have enjoyed looking through your photos. I especially like the sunsets on Lake Verret. They bring back wonderful memories with our kids. We spent many afternoons on the water fishing and swimming till the sun went down. I will make this site one of my favorites and visit often. Thanks.

Hello, I stumbled upon your site when I was searching for information on the swan currently living in Audubon Park. I've been walking there daily for a few weeks now, and I've noticed how lonely he/she often seems (even surrounded by all of the ducks). Was there once a mate? Your photos are absolutely wonderful!!! I've bookmarked your site so I can return for more browsing. Really, really lovely. Thanks-

Susie Stoner 13-Sep-2010 15:45
Dear Coleen,

Hello! I am a graphic artist (in Ohio) & was recently inspired by the music of Louisiana musician, C.C. Adcock. I am designing a logo for him (just for kicks) & wanted it to incorporate the 'feel' of Louisiana in the design, as his music does the same.

I stumbled upon your gallery, when searching for photos of Live Oaks. The Live Oak is a tree I am well aware of... but I am sad to say, I've never had (what must be) the humbling & religious experience of standing near an ancient one. Your photos of the oaks & of Louisiana in general do the same thing C.C.'s songs do - They are both imbued with the spirit & 'feel' of your state & they make me want to at LEAST visit!!!

You are obviously a concerned environmentalist too from some of the photo comments I read. My sincere & heart felt sympathy for the oil crisis in the Gulf. It breaks hearts all over the world, but none like those living on the coast, I am certain. :(

Sincerely,

Susie Stoner
Greenville, Oh.

Ms. Landry,
Your image "Live Oaks" from City Park was one of several online images that I compiled as inspiration for a design project I did during my final semester of interior design school. The project was for a community center in a neighborhood of New Orleans having trouble with repopulation after the storm. Your image and several others of oak trees and their roots helped me develop the concept of "Rootedness" that I used throughout my entire final project. As a recent graduate I'm building a portfolio and website to showcase my work and I'd like to ask for permission to use or purchase your photograph within this context. Please feel free to email me at TinaLee2584@gmail.com if you'd like further details on my intended use for your photo. Thanks for your time and for your inspiring photography.
Sincerely,
Christina Hofer

Hi Coleen,
Saw your pictures for the first time last night. They are truly special. I no longer live in the New Orleans area. My entire life seemed to parade by as I viewed your beautiful pictures. Thank you. Until you move elsewhere you really don't know what it means to Miss New Orleans. And goodness, Katrina sure took a lot of our past away from us. I saw on another web site you attended Destrehan. Was wondering if you knew my father or some of my relatives. My dad was Peter Abate. I still have relatives in St. Rose. Look forward to seeing your future pics on pbase.

Coleen...Just want to let you know how much I have enjoyed your galleries. You are helping to keep history alive for generations to come. I hope your state realizes what a treasure you are! I especially was intrigued by your accounts of Katrina. My husband works for the national media and was down there for 8 weeks and of course went back on occasion through the years to mark anniversaries of Katrina. He has many heartwarming and devistating stories to tell also...I can only imagine the volumes that could be filled. We recently had a chance to go to New Orleans on our way back from vacation. It was mostly to see the progress and we did a little scouting for future trips. One of those scouting trips was down River Road. What a glorious drive! I was especially taken in by Evergreen. I could have starred at the Live Oaks for hours! You are truly blessed to live in a magical place. I hope the heart of Louisiana continues to heal. It is people like you that will help that progress by giving the world a glimpse in to yours.
I look forward to keeping up with your stories.

Hi Coleen,

I'm the guy who was standing on the sea wall last Saturday evening taking pictures of the Lake Pontchartrain sunset - thought I'd stop by and take a look at your very nice site.

My photographs are on flickr. The URL is www.flickr.com/photos/jacoulter/ if you'd like to take a look.

It was nice meeting you and you're right - Lake Pontchartrain has some of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen.

Hi Colleen,
I was emailed the photo of your brother's funeral over a year ago and have kept it in my email since. At the time I was unaware of your site and did not write to you. Who was the pastor/priest who officiated at the funeral? He has an uncanny resemblence to my brother who is also a minister, but we know it wasn't him. I hope he delivered a wonderful service for your family as your brother appears to have been an outstanding man. I appreciate any info. Thanks. sitinsewin@yahoo.com

Dear Coleen;
What a pleasant surprise to find your gallery while researching St. Joseph's Abbey! I'm sure you don't remember me, a college friend of Cary. I was married for several years to the son of Margie Lehew. Your photos are breath taking. I remember helping Cary clean the grave sites of your ancestors before All Saints Day one fall. I am so glad that you have Perilloux place.

Lovely photos, Coleen. I love City Park and it broke my heart to see it the way it was. I eat lunch in the park once a week or so since the storm. There were days in spring 2006 when I had the whole park to myself. As bad as it was, it was still gorgeous.

Ms. Coleen Perilloux Landry--I am writing you after learning of your wonderful photographic website, and I'm proud to say, I worked for you 30 years ago. You taught me a great deal about writing, photography, but mostly about LIFE. I fondly remember seeing you carry your big, heavy 35mm camera wherever you went, hoping to capture the right picture for the newspaper, a talent you display beautifully today on this world wide web!!! My My, how our world has changed in these 30 years....electronically, journalistically, communicatively....You go girl for keeping up with all the technology and doing it with such professional ease. I especially love the self portrait of you with barefeet in a long floral skirt at the "plantation." Your home, n'est pas?? Speaking of plantations, you may recall it was about 1977 when you and I went to a plantation (forgot the name) for a fancy creole dinner with some high-ranking folks from Jefferson Parish. Names need not be mentioned herewith, but the eventful evening will be permanently etched in my memory bank, particulary noting my naivite...quite evident back then, as I was a cub reporter straight out of the LSU School of Journalism. But back to your photos and how beautifully they portray a visual reminder to me of the state I love. Living in Pittsburgh now since 1984, my 3 children (my yankee legacies) are finally seeing for themselves through lenses like yours, what a cool state their mother grew up in. Thank-you for bringing out the best in La Louisianne .... pas partout. Your friend, Jeanne Dutel. I now teach Journalism, Creative Writing and English to high school students and am proud to have had our paths cross --- I often, very, very often think of you with a big smile on my face. I will check back soon for new arrivals. Jeanne.

I came about your gallery by accident,am in awe of your pictures. I to like looking up pictures of tugboats. I am also wondering about your last name landry, same as mine,as kid in the fifties we visited relatives in minneapolis, minn. I was told that the families came from louisianna in the early 1800s eventually homesteading in manitoba,ca.my dads parents came from clinton, iowa. I liked the pics of old buildings, and lantations.

Coleen, Thank you so much for the experience you offer people in sorting out the issues, facts, realities of Katrina. It is so humbling to look through your gallery. I am a graduate student of urban planning in New York, NY. I am working with a group of students with rebuilding strategies and community organization. We will be in New Orleans the week of the 19th - our second trip. These images are a helpful look into day to day realities for residents.

Hi Coleen,

Just seen your Katrina pictures, my heart goes out to you and everybody who was caught up in this natural tragedy. At least you had the good thought to get out when you did. Things can be rebuilt, people can't. Thank you for sharing your saddest time with us and I am glad that you are able to put your life back together. I was also interested in the wild life as they are never mentioned when these natural disasters happen. I'm glad to see that they are not forgotten. You have some really good photos here and some very sad moments to. But I'm glad you are still with us and we have not been deprived of your photography.

Best regards
Joanne

PS By the way when ever I see your name Landry I wonder whether we are distantly related as my Grandmother's maiden name was Landry and I believe that some of the Landry family went to live in Australia and America.

I'm now living in Duluth, Georgia, being a refugee from Metiarie... Thanks for the many pictures, especially for the before and after shots that you have... those seem to bring it home! I had nothing to come back to so my partner and I have made a home here. I'll always miss it, my friends at work, the look and the feel of New Orleans... I've been back 3 times and it's just so sad to see what was once such a beautiful place now barren. Thank you for the pics!

I am in agreement with your comment about being unable to shoot a wild turkey. Funny thing is that nature is very much in accord with our feelings. Friends of mine who like to hunt birds tell me that the turkey is the most elusive of all of the game birds. Deer fire arm season coincides with turkey season in Michigan and the sight of blaze orange is enough to drive the birds into hiding for the length of the season. Turkey flocks are flourishing in Michigan.

Hi Coleen,
Here's the answer to the question you left at my PAD today. Old Rag is the name of a mountain in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The PAD photo is a fire road (for access incase of forest fires, otherwise hikers only - no vehicles) that starts on Skyline Drive near milepost 42 in Shenandoah National Park. Old Rag mountain gets its name from the rock from which it's made - a formation known as Old Rag Granite. Thus - Old Rag Fire Road. Visit Ed's PAD and get your daily geography & geology lesson ;>}

Wonderful images of my original home. I grew up in Terrebonne Parish, and attended St. Joseph's in St. Benedict at the high school level for 3 years (1950-53). Thank you for those lovely pictures that bring back so many memories -- I had almost forgotten how beautiful the church artwork is. I seldom get back to Louisiana any more and your photos are a nice artistic reminder of what a physically beautiful place it is. My family will enjoy this group of galleries.

It is so lovely and never had such good cooking. Thanks for informing me of the Live Oaks Society. I am going to look that up right away. Kathy

Coleen, I did leave this comment in response to your comment on my pad for today:

You know, Coleen, now that you mention it, there was a grandfather from this side of the family ... Story goes that he was riding his horse drawn carriage to town and got picked up by a tornado. The horse was killed and the grandfather was in a coma for several days but he did live to tell about it. I will have to see if this wheel is from that wagon!

Thanks, Cindi

Hi Coleen, Thank you for your message on my site. The picture with the sheeps was taken in the Normandie / France at the Mont Saint Michel. It is wonderful there. No worries the sheeps looked fine to me. They put red color on some of them. Thierry

Thanks for visiting my galleries. The gator pic taught me a tough lesson. I had left my tripod in the car...after taking several shots, I went back to get it. By the time I got back the gator had left. There are several more of this sequence in my "Lettuce Lake" gallery.
