Vieng Phouka and Route 3

I arrived in Vieng Phouka from Luang Nam Tha. The journey along Route 3 was the bumpiest I had yet to encounter, and I was very glad the truck was so packed, as it meant we were not thrown around so much.

The town itself was a small place, with super-friendly children, hardly anyone who spoke English, and a strange lack of vegetables. They did do Eco-Trekking from there...at least they did when it wasn't raining constantly. I tried to go on a one day hike, but it didn't happen.

The journey from Vieng Phouka to the border was quite an adventure! Very muddy roads.

Hhm...Route 3. In the 'works' since 1995, a jungle footpath aspiring to be a 200 km highway linking China with Laos. In January's dry season we were choking from the baking trails and dust. Luang Namtha to Huay Xai took just 10 hours in a mini bus. Some sections are still virgin jungle, but wont be for very long. Mountain biking Rt 3 should be quite interesting.

If we had known the conditions, we would have been more worried when you were out of touch. Horrendous conitions, but great pictures. X
