I served on Engineer Group April '68 to March '69, then moved-lock.stock and footlocker,to QuiNhon, when I was sooooo short,I couldn't see over my boot heels, through Maign(sic?) Yang Pass on the convoy to the coast.......as a short-timer,having read the fall of Deign Bien Phu,and the masacure (sic) of 40,000+ Frenchmen in the pass , during their occupation of Viet Nam......Colonial Kratz....Lt. Col. Cole........Sgt Major(Last name??) "Baseball hats" Who issued the order,No more "boony hats" for HHC 937th troops......we MUST wear baseball hats like he wore.....we earned the right to wear boony hats as 937th COMBAT ENGINEERS, I helped put a stop to his order along with Chaplin (Major} Ray A.Strawser who brought-up the fact of poor morale at a morning update with Col. Kratz.......who recinded the order......even Sgt.Major showed-up at morning roll call in a boony hat,for about 2 weeks, then went back to his baseball cap......remember...... our two HQ dogs,Juile (lLittle Puta) and "Lifer"? The Christmas tree in the center of the circle behind HQ buildng near the mailroom?......A lot of guys had their pictures taken in front of that Christmas tree with Cambodia 4 or 5 mile to the west of Engineer Hill in the back ground.....Sure would like to see some of those pics.......We had gotten two pines from a nearby French Compound, with 3or 4 Green Berets, and a detail of ARVN soldiers, Green Beanie shouted "Freeze" as ARVN troops carried the trees out from an abandoned French MINE FIELD!..........

Hi, I served at AG CO HQS USARV in the main command building in the Administrative Service Division - Staff Message Center from January 8, 1968 to April 8, 1969. I was working at Pentagon East. The War Room in the basement. We lost about 2,000 troops a month while I was there. In April of 1968 we lost almost 4,000 troops alone. My specific job as a Specialist 5th Class was to take in all the death reports, 12 hours a day, seven days a week. We should have never been there, I have visited the Wall in D.C. twice. It almost makes you want to die right on the spot.

This message is for A.W. Rizzo. I believe you served with my father, James Tuttle, at Bien Hoa in 1965-66. He asked if I could use the internet to find those he's served with in Vietnam. He recently re-connected with Alvarado and he has always stayed in contact with Danny Kavotchkoff (spelling?).

If this is the same A.W. Rizzo as posted on this site, please email me at Tuts2313@yahoo.com and I will relay to Dad.

Thank you

To all my brothers who served with me in 196th Co. A 3/21 2nd platoon, What's up dudes!
I hope all you guys are still in the game. I have never gone to the reunions, but this year I'm going to try. If anyone who reads this was down with the "old crew", give me a shout out at 9175605717. I was a pointman must of the time and survived the ambush on highway 13#, better known as thunder road. This incident took place 4/1/67 ( April Fools day) I think about the guys who did'nt. So if anyone reads this from those days write or call. peace and love

Hi,
I'm looking for a military patch that was given during the Vietnam War era. My father was in the 101st Airborne and was a Green Beret, he served twice in Vietnam. While there he received two patches that resembled a Shmoo or was a Shmoo for hooking up a cargo shipment under a helicopter in flight. Unfortunately the patches were destroyed in flood waters. Do you or anyone else know about this type of patch? He says that it was not a government issued patch, but one that was made up specifically for his regiment in Vietnam. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Leon Espe 28-Jul-2008 15:17
Hi - My name is Leon Espe. I was in Hq Co, 69th Sig Bn on Tonsonute AFB (sp?)from Feb 67 to Mar 68. I was acting Personnel Sgt for the first 8 or nine months until a real Personnel Sgt arrived then took over as Acting First Sgt of Hq Co because the assigned First Sgt went on emergency leave. He never returned from emergency leave so I held the job thru TET and until rotation to the states. I was a SFC E7 at the time and was promoted to E8 with retractive pay raise when I was reassigned to Hq Co/Det, USAG, Fort Leavenworth, KS in March 1968. Although I have attended reunions of my Korean War battalion, I have yet to find anyone from the 69th Sig Bn during 1967-68 Vietnam era. I recently learned of a 1st Sig Bde Reunion but I would like to hear from someone from the 69th, especially if they knew me back ten. I am now 76 years old and holding...Leon Espe, 1SG, US Army, Ret.
