Former sugar cane plantation

Kauai

Agriculture is in decline in Hawaii. Although there is abundant land and rich soil, the islands are not self sufficient in the most basic items because labour intensive farming is no longer profitable. Immigrant workers will no longer work for $3 a month as they once did on the pineapple and sugar plantations. The only farms I saw were a few small market gardens. We were told that if food shipments from the mainland were interrupted for more than 5 days there would be widespread shortages.
