Xiphidiopicus percussus cocoensis
As many as six different subspecies of Cuban Green Woodpecker have been named, but following the work of Arturo Kirkconnell (Cotinga 14: 94–98), only two subspecies are generally recognised. Thus, cocoensis of Cayo Coco (where this photograph was taken) and related cays is now considered a synonym of the nominate race. This beautiful woodpecker is surely one of the most attractive of Cuba's many fine endemics, and the genus Xiphidiopicus is found only on the island.
