Michael

Phoenix zoo.

This is Michael. He is the male Bornean Orangutan at the Phoenix zoo.
The family consists of Duchess and her daughter Bess. Bess mated with Michael and they produced Kasih.
Duchess is one of the original inhabitants of the Pheonix zoo. She arrived in 1962. She just turned 50 this year. That is ten years older than the life expectancy in the wild. She is an artist of note. She enjoys painting. Kasih will turn 4 in January.
Michael is 22 years old and weighs 260 pounds.
I always make a trip to the Phoenix zoo and Orangutan family part of my winter travel.

Well, hello Michael! Wow, what a big boy he is. A beautiful portrait, Cindy; the lighting in his face is very nice indeed.

Super shot, and good that these days some zoo's really do have the animals best interests at heart.

Beautiful portrait of a wonderful being. I have to wonder
what they think and if captivity, no matter how comfortable,
accommodating, and similar to their natural habitat has a
negative effect on them in some way as it might with a person.
I'm sure they adapt quite well.

Fascinating animals to study. Unusual with the built-in "blinkers" which are unique
to orangutans. They are endangered in Borneo because of the indiscriminate logging.
Thanks for showing us Michael, Cindy.

Michael, Yes, he turned toward me and made eye contact while I took this photo.
I have been visiting this family since Kasih was first born. They are extremely interesting to observe.
The Orangutans will not be on display from October until next February. The zoo is in the process of building a new home for the family. There will be a grand opening of the exhibit February, 2011. I will miss seeing them next year.

Quite the handsome fellow.
I am sure he knew that he was being imaged.
These creatures are amazingly intelligent.
Beautiful specimen, beautiful portrait...
